Developing Leaders in Learning and Organizational Performance

:

In the recently released ATD whitepaper Instructional Design Now: A New Age of Learning and Beyond, David Berz, head of instructional design at LinkedIn had this to say: "In my group, we call ourselves the learning experience team because we don't believe in just designing a training course or a workshop. We're trying to create real experiences for people--to meet them where they are. So they aren't just taking training, they are actually living it, experiencing it, and being excited about it."

His words prompted me to reflect on a recent learning experience that made me feel that way. I enrolled in my first-ever MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) given by the University of Houston through Coursera. It was a 5-week course called "Powerful Tools for Teaching and Learning: Web 2.0 Tools." The course was designed for K-12 teachers, community college and university instructors, as well as corporate trainers and instructional designers. There were thousands of participants from countries all over the world.

The course was created and administered by a team of three professors along with their doctoral students from the Laboratory for Innovative Technology in Education (LITE) in the College of Education, University of Houston, who were learning how to design, develop and deliver the content using new technologies. The course was designed to provide L&D professionals

with strategies to effectively integrate Web 2.0 technologies into our instruction.

We reviewed and "played" with dozens of free, easy to use, online tools designed to boost student engagement and motivation in the classroom. The approach focused on the task rather than the tool in an effort to help us improve communication, collaboration, presentation, creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking in our learners. Each of us had to complete a mini-action research project utilizing a chosen tool. I chose Kahoot, a

web-based feedback tool in the form of a game-based classroom response system.

We had an opportunity to interact with the UH team and each other through the forums and weekly Google Hangout sessions. The exchange of ideas and best practices between participants from highly diverse teaching and training environments was truly remarkable.

At the end of the course, the UH team agreed to keep the site open for an additional 30 days so we could continue to access the materials and participate with each other in the discussion forums. It's pretty remarkable when very busy adults don't want "class" to end!

Each month brings exciting programs and our attendance is increasing, plus we are forming more Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Our chapter is consistently growing and evolving in positive ways! You already know about our popular Facilitators Exchange SIG, and now we have more! We are developing an e-Learning SIG as well as a Mentoring SIG. If you have experience in either of these fields and would like to volunteer for these SIGs please email us at: programs@atdrmc.org. We'll be sending further information on our SIGs through our website, newsletters, and social media outlets.

ATD RMC also has a terrific partnership with the International Coach Federation's local chapter. Since coaching is closely related to the learning and development world, it is only natural that both of our organizations form a strong partnership focused on bringing you educational programs. If you are a chapter member of ATD RMC, you may register to attend an ICF event at a discounted price. Any ICF Colorado members can attend our events at a discounted price as well. It's a win-win partnership, so visit the ICF website and attend an event!

Our VP of Professional Development, Rachel Drysdale, works hard to bring you engaging programs every month with topics to suit all members. Our upcoming May event will be an interactive panel session on "The Science of Learning" moderated by our Past President, Becky Magnotta. In June, we have a program on e-Learning with e-Learning guru, Thomas Toth.

Last year, if you missed our mega networking event with the International Coach Federation-Colorado (ICF-Colorado) and the National Speakers Association (NSA), you'll have to be sure to join us at this event when we announce the date in the coming weeks.

Remember to check out our virtual programs too! Our March virtual event had more than 20 attendees and was a huge hit, so make sure you attend our interactive June 10th webinar on "Virtual Program Game Changers: Technology Trends in Learning & Development" with Amy Franko from Impact Instruction Group.

Check our website and social media outlets for our many exciting events and we look forward to seeing you there!

Harnessing Springtime to Propel Yourself Forward
  By Linda Merkl, Ph.D.

Department Chair, M.S. Adult Education & Training

Regis University

 lmerkl@regis.edu

Springtime! What I wonderful time of the year to renew the goals you have set for yourself. If you're like me, making life decisions at the end of a busy holiday season when it's cold and wintery, isn't the best idea. Now, in springtime, use the energy of the budding trees and flowers, the longer days, and the warm sunshine to help propel you forward.

Below are a few thoughts to help get your started on re-envisioning a bright future for you and the world around you.

  • Context - This might also be called taking stock. Where are you now? What talent, skills, and abilities do you already have, and where do you want to be one, three, or five years from now? How is your family, social, and work life going? What do you want to contribute to the world around you? This makes up the context, the circumstances or events that form the environment in which you make a decision.
  • Experience - This is the creative part! What do you already know or do that you can bring to your potential goals? This includes what facts, feelings, values, insights and intuitions do you bring to the subject of your desired goal(s)? Where does your passion intersect with what the world needs from you?
  • Action - After considering your context and experience, make a goal and develop an action plan. Here you will seek the opportunities that will challenge your imagination and exercise your will to choose the best possible course of action for yourself and the world around you.

This process has been simplified and adapted from Jesuit pedagogy and it provides an opportunity to make a reasoned investigation through which to make decisions. It highlights some of the main characteristics of the way we do things at Regis University.

At Regis University we don't just graduate students. We create an environment where you can bring your context and experience and apply it to creating a better future for yourself and those around you.

Our Master of Science in Adult Education and Training (MS-ADET) Degree  develops leaders for adult learning environments including corporate training, workforce development, higher education and continuing education who understand context, experience, and action as it relates to human learning.

Our  Master of Science in Organization Leadership degree (MSOL) with a specialization in HR Management and Leadership explores leadership from a strategic perspective while offering an opportunity to cultivate the skills to think critically, create vision based on ethical values, discern the future, take risks and institute change within an organization.

Let us help you create your future by contacting our Admissions department at 1-800-944-7667 or  ruadmissions@regis.edu.

Spotlight Q&A
What inspires you to achieve new professional heights?

"I believe in providing excellent customer service and am always looking at how to improve those services within the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

I may experience this by helping individuals find an answer, teaching a new skill, actively participating in various committees or troubleshooting issues.

Wanting to provide excellent customer service means that I need to continuously grow and develop my own skills. The process of life-long learning is challenging and inspirational for me.

The need to do something I have never done before, or by working with people that push me to test new ideas, creates that inspiration
