ATD RMC Monthly Newsletter
February 2015
Developing Leaders in Learning and Organizational Performance

:

Notice anything different?

I hope so! This month's newsletter has a new look. As you can see, our color scheme has changed to better reflect the new ATD branding. It now more closely resembles our weekly program update, too.

We're also excited about the coming addition of a Member/Volunteer Spotlight feature. We have such a vibrant chapter with talented members and dedicated volunteers that we'd like to recognize them!

Beginning with our March meeting, we will have a drawing to select one member and one volunteer from those present. These folks will be featured in our April newsletter, and on our ATD RMC website.

This will be one more way to help members get to know each other better, creating a stronger talent development community.

This month's newsletter also features a guest article from one of our sponsors, Gene Tognacci, owner of elearningvoices.net and genetognacci.com. Gene has provided us with a review of a time-saving audio production tool called Word2Wav.

Looks like the new year is off to a great start, and I look forward to seeing you at our March 10th meeting!

President's Message   presmessage2

It's hard to believe that we are already in the 2nd month of 2015! The year is off and running, and so is ATD RMC! After a wonderful and inspiring Board retreat in January, the Board members spent a Saturday brainstorming and working hard to create achievable goals in 2015. Our overarching goal for 2015 is Building a Legacy. Building a legacy is something that is near and dear to my heart, professionally and personally.

Last year, under the tutelage of our current Past President, Becky Magnotta, we saw many positive and exciting changes in our chapter. One of the best changes we saw is the legacy that Becky left behind. We improved all around as a chapter and brought you award winning programs as well as being honored nationally as Chapter of the Month in September. Additionally, we gained and retained chapter members and we are financially healthy!

All of these accomplishments came from hard working and passionate board members, but there was one person who held us all accountable and whose excitement and determination was contagious, and that was Becky Magnotta. She was motivating, determined, and inspiring, and ultimately took the Rocky Mountain Chapter to new heights.

As I embark on my term as President, I recognize that I have big shoes to fill and I look forward to carrying the torch. Thank you Becky, and board members, for all your dedication. I think it's also important to say thank you to all of our sponsors and members for continuing to join us for events and supporting the chapter as a whole.

Over the holidays, as I prepared to take the reins in 2015, I was reflecting on this past year and I began thinking, "What do I want to leave behind? What will my legacy be to this amazing chapter?" These questions, and the reflection of the past two years of my service on the Board brought me to the 2015 goal of Building Our Legacy. Everybody has a legacy, so what's yours? How do you want to be remembered? As a hard worker? A team leader? A successful entrepreneur? A risk taker?

As your 2015 President, we will continue to grow our membership and finances, and continue to apply for awards in all facets of our chapter. In fact, we are already submitting an application for the Chapter Excellence Award in the category of "Advancing the profession through the Certified Professional in Learning Performance (CPLP) credential."

In 2014, our board member, Yvonne Bogard, tirelessly devoted her time and energy to the CPLP program and had success in not only achieving her own CPLP credential, but organizing virtual study groups for both Colorado and Wyoming chapters. Now, Yvonne is actively involved in a pilot program to develop a robust chapter CPLP program.

As I close this President's Message, I think of every Saturday Night Live monologue I have ever watched. Each guest host says at the end of their monologue, "We have a great show for you tonight!" So, why reinvent the wheel? "We have a great year ahead of us!" Stay tuned for educational and exciting programs, continued success, more awards, and most importantly leaving a legacy of passion, success, action, and betterment in 2015!

Very Truly Yours,

Michele Padilla, M.A.

2015 ATD Rocky Mountain Chapter President

Word2WAV - Audio Production Tool Automates File Naming

By Gene Tognacci, owner, elearningvoices.net and genetognacci.com

Over the last few months at elearningvoices.net we've seen a significant change in the length of individual audio files for eLearning projects. Ten or twenty: 30 to: 60 second audio files for a 10 minute learning module used to be the norm. Now for the same length project we're getting 75 to 100 files of a sentence or less in length, to accent quicker visual changes.   (Think individual steps in an algebra problem or a software explainer taking you through the drill downs.)

That has turned a one hour project--30 minutes to record/30 minutes to edit--into a 3 hour project--30 minutes to record /2 hours to edit and name files. Some clients are willing to pay for the 2 hour additional editing fee. Others are expecting me to absorb it. I bill clients by the finished minute and that's a lot to absorb for a 10 finished minute project.

To find a way to automate the process, I've turned to Word2WAV. Word2WAV is an audio production tool that allows the user to input scripts in just about any format (Word, Excel, etc.) and read from the computer screen while recording into the computer with any microphone. When you are done, push a button and out come all your files nicely split up, perfectly named and ready for integration with visuals.

Audio quality is dependent upon what microphone you are using, but I've gotten great results with both a USB microphone and a condenser mic plugged into an audio interface. Word2WAV is using the built in audio record hardware in your computer, so with a high quality mic I'm getting studio quality sound.

Developer Hervé Chain originally created the program for use in his translation business, and it has a very user-friendly interface. (Against my curmudgeonly bent, I did have to read the short manual.) And because of its pedigree, it accepts scripts in a number of foreign languages.

Word2WAV is a simple and much needed tool for any desktop eLearning recording project involving the recording and naming of dozens or hundreds of multiple files. You can find out more information about Word2WAV at www.word2wav.com. And, of course, you'll still want a professional to narrate, so until Text-to-Speech becomes more reliable, let me put in a shameless plug for www.elearningvoices.net.

SocialMediaTip
Social Media Tip of the Month

In the last tip, I started a venture with Hootsuite and intended to do many columns on its development for our chapter. However, I'm putting that on hold for one month as a couple of instructive incidents concerning social media have happened to me in the past month.

As you know, the holidays are a time of get-togethers, which means lots of pictures. And what good are pictures in this age without sharing them on the Internet? In snapping pictures at a gift exchange, I took one of my sister making a funny face at the camera. I thought it was humorous and showed the fun-loving side of her personality. But she was very upset when I posted it to Facebook--a reaction I had not anticipated. To make matters worse, people kept commenting on it so it took a long time to fade away.

Lesson #1: consider long and hard how people might react to a post meant to be humorous.

I uploaded an album of all the pictures I took after taking considerable time to tag everyone in them. An aunt didn't like the fact that she was tagged--another reaction I hadn't anticipated.

Lesson #2: just don't tag people. I can't think of a single advantage it affords that is worth the risk.

I hope these tips help you in effective use of social media. If you have suggestions or questions about using social media for your chapter, you can contact me at  tedpenberthy@gmail.com

ATD RMC Receives 3rd Sharing Our Success Award in a Year!

The national SOS program identifies best practices among local ATD chapters and uses them as models for other chapters.

We received this award due to the innovative approach used to fill the VP Finance - Treasurer position. Since most ATD members don't possess deep knowledge of finance or technical accounting, the Board collaborated with the local CPA professional association to find someone specifically with financial expertise for non-profits.
