ATD RMC Newsletter
June 2014
Developing Leaders in Learning and Organizational Performance

Did you know that ATD RMC has recently become a member of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce? That means that as a member of our ATD RMC chapter, you have some great benefits to take advantage of!

One of the benefits of membership is that we can take FREE classes from the Small Business Development Center. Our VP of Volunteer Engagement, Sue Fody, has already taken three courses so far: Start Up Basics, Marketing Basics, and Business Plan Basics. Additionally, one on one consulting is available for Sue after with participation in this series. How cool is that?

Also, these classes are scheduled either during the day or evening which is helpful if you work full time or are running your own business and want to either brush up on the basics or learn something new.

The additional learning opportunities at the Denver Metro Chamber are excellent. The content is solid and immediately actionable!

School may be out, but the Learning goes on!

We are nearly half way through 2014. It's a great time to assess where you are to your goals and your development as learning professionals. Whether through our monthly meetings, newsletters, blogs, books - there are lots of resources at your finger tips.

Speaking of resources, I encourage you to become part of the MOOC (Massive Open On-line Courses) movement. These courses are FREE and you can find topics from "Inspiring Leadership and Emotional Intelligence" to "Organizational Analysis" and much more. The courses are taught by professors at major universities such as Stanford, Virginia Tech, Case Western Reserve and Brown. The largest vendor is www.coursera.org. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Your chapter is healthy and growing. As of the writing of this newsletter, we have $24,712 in the bank, which covers a year of expenses, as part of our Chapter Operating Requirements (CORE). We currently have 226 members. Welcome to our 17 new members.

I hope to see many of you at our next meeting on June 19th at the Regis South Campus Timothy LaMacchio's topic is "Collaborating with Frontline Managers to Improve Business Results". Anybody who develops, designs or delivers training to frontline managers needs to join us. Details are on our site.

As I mentioned last month, we've decided to not have an event in July because of summer vacations. On August 21st we will partner with the National Speakers Forum and the International Coaching Federation for a fun networking event at The Living Room on Broadway. This is a great opportunity to network with speaking, coaching and learning professionals.

We will start up in September with Carol Clark covering the hot topic of gamification, and Ken Phillips talking about evaluating your training.

Thank you for your continued support and contribution to our community. Your participation, thoughts and energy keep us strong and help us thrive. I encourage you to make the most of your membership by joining us at meetings, and volunteering. Volunteering is a great way to expand your skills and knowledge, and helps you get and stay connected to the Denver learning community.

We are here to serve you. Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions. You can email me at

Thank you,

Becky Magnotta

2014 ASTD Rocky Mountain Chapter President.

Sharing Our Success!

Our chapter was recently recognized for its submission to the ASTD "Sharing Our Success" (SOS) program for our Drink and Draw program. The national SOS program identifies best practices among local ASTD chapters and uses them as models for other chapters.

Rhonda Bothwell, Chair of ASTD's Chapter Recognition Committee said, "This recognition honors the ASTD RMC chapter's best practice that demonstrates its commitment to managing a successful organization as well as advancing the learning and development profession at the local level. We are excited to honor the chapter with ASTD's SOS recognition."
