The Winter 2012-2013 edition of the Naval Historical Foundation Pull Together has been sent to press and will be in the mail to members of the NHF in the next 7-10 days.
In this edition, NHF takes a look at how the Royal Navy uses its great historical legacy to support current operations and educate the British public on the importance of the sea for a traditional sea faring nation. Featured is an interview with the Former First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir. Jonathon Band, who currently serves as the Chairman of Trustees for the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN). As the former leader of a naval service having a much longer history than the U.S. Navy, Band offers insights on how naval history impressed him, how it has been taught and used within the Royal Navy, and how it has been employed in efforts to eradicate "Sea Blindness" amongst segments of the British population.
With the Royal Navy in mind, this edition continues its series of portraits of American naval leaders from the War of 1812. Retired Captain William Manthorpe Jr. examines the career of Jacob Jones, who in command of the American Sloop of War Wasp, bested the British Sloop of War Frolic in October 1812.
Retired Captain and author Andrew C.A. Jampoler studied a diary of an Army officer that recently was donated to the Library of Congress through Naval Historical Foundation that discusses a failed attempt to rescue an Army expedition to Northern Canada in the 1880s and writes about "The Lady Franklin Bay Relief Expedition and the Wreck of SS Proteus."
This edition of Pull Together also features its Navy Museum News pull-out insert detailing future plans for the now-opened Cold War Gallery and several other short articles about Navy history news and the various activities of the NHF.
If you are not a dues-paying member or life member of the NHF, this is a great time in the next 48 hours to sign up and join so that you can obtain this latest edition. Visit www.navyhistory.org!
