New York State will soon decide on whether to approve a proposal by our community's power plan to "repower" using natural gas instead of coal. Those supporting this transition to natural gas should contact the Governor's office by December 24th. We expect a decision to be announced shortly after.

How to Contact the Governor
Please call 518-474-1041 to let Governor Cuomo know that you support the repowering of the Cayuga Operating Company plant.
Impact of Repowering
The Cayuga Power Plant Repowering project is in line with the main focus of New York's Energy Highway Blueprint as well as it will expand and strengthen the Energy Highway, accelerate construction and repair by modernizing a NY generation asset, supports the goal toward clean energy, and allows for the expansion of renewable alternatives.

Community Opportunities and Benefit:
  • Keeps permanent, high-tech jobs in the community
  • Creates up to 563 construction jobs and 90 permanent jobs when the indirect impact is considered
    • 10.5% School District base
    • 6.9% Town tax base
    • 1.3% County tax base
  • Continued operations of the plant adds approximately $1,000,000 to the local economy annually
    • Purchasing local goods and services
    • Performing maintenance work
    • Capital improvements
Regional Opportunities and Benefits

  • Increases the power quality of the grid allowing the area to retain and attract today's high tech manufacturing
  • Addresses Climate Change issues through greenhouse gas reductions and higher efficiency
  • Promotes Sustainability with Brownfield Development vs. Greenfield Development
  • Maintains energy production in New York reducing the reliance on imports from higher emitting generation
  • Makes highly efficient, low cost, clean energy available to the grid at low cost for all rate payers
  • Enables renewables to be expanded as the options all provide voltage support, demand flexibility and spinning reserve
