The California Redwoods Bird & Nature Festival
The California Redwoods Bird & Nature Festival kicks off this Friday, May 7, for a weekend of expert-led birding events, nature tours, boat trips, environmental lectures, flower tours, kayaking, tidepool exploration, and much more.
Formerly called the Aleutian Goose Festival, for the first time this year the Festival is dramatically expanding its scope to incorporate and celebrate the wondrous plant and animal life of the Northern Coast.
The keynote speaker is Michael Fay, the explorer-in-residence at National Geographic who spent nearly a year hiking 700 miles through the coastal redwood forests of California.
Highlights of the weekend include birding hikes through Del Norte County's National and State Parks, chartered boat trips to nearby offshore islands that are prime nesting area for several species of seabirds, and an Klamath River boat tour led by Yurok Tribe members.

Crescent City Among "America's Prettiest Towns" for the Second Year
Forbes Magazine has selected Crescent City, Calif. as one of the prettiest towns in the country... for the second year running!

Judges were again awestruck by the breathtaking scale of Crescent City's natural wonders - whether peering up at a sky-scraping redwood grove or taking in a panoramic sunset as it sets over a long, empty beach, Crescent City has a way of reminding us about the awesome power of nature. Crescent City's historic working harbor also charmed the judges (and the bounty of fresh seafood they brought back each evening helped). A panel of photographers, artists, travel writers and architects criss-crossed the country in search of the 25 towns that embody just the right mix of small-town charm, natural beauty and striking architecture. Some picks, like the fiercely local Dillon, Mt., stood out for their classic Main Street lined with independently owned shops; others caught the judges' eyes with iconic architectural features, like the slender white steeples that dot the hills of Burlington, Vt., or the colorful Victorian townhouses lining the streets of Cape May, N.J.
