Family and friends of RE Leland "Lee" Murphree,St. Philip Presbyterian, Houston - Lee died Jan. 18. He was a dedicated and longtime member of the church. He is survived by his wife Marian.


Family and friends of 
RE John A. Mawhinney, Jr., First Presbyterian, Houston - John, son of a Presbyterian pastor, died Jan. 19 at age 95. In addition to his service to the church, he served on the boards of Holly Hall Retirement Community and Brazos Presbyterian Homes. He is survived by his wife, Lucy McLeod Mawhinney.

Family and friends of RE John S. Eaton, John Knox Presbyterian, Houston - John died Jan 20 at age 96. He is survived by his wife Jeannette.

Wendy Bleike, First Presbyterian, Tomball - Wendy's husband, Charles "Mike" Bleike died Jan. 22. A memorial service will be held Sat., Feb. 7, at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Wendy previously was a candidate under care.

TE Laureen Suba - Laureen will be ordained as Minister of Word and Sacrament Sun., Feb. 1, 2:00 p.m. at St. Philip Presbyterian, Houston. Dr. Cynthia Rigby, Austin Presbyterian Seminary will preach, the Calabash choir from St. Paul Presbyterian, Houston, will be dancing, and the St. Philip choir will be singing. Laureen is serving as Executive Director for United Campus Ministry of Greater Houston.

Mission Day for Young Adults scheduled for Sat., January 31, has been cancelled.

Retirement planning
Make plans now to attend one or both of the Board of Pensions workshops, sponsored by the Presbytery of New Covenant. "Post-Retirement Seminar" will be held Wed., Mar. 4, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. "Render unto Caesar" will be offered Thurs., Mar. 5, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Both workshops will be held at the Presbytery Center.

Register no later than Fri., Feb. 6. Seating is limited to 30 registrants. There is no charge to attend.

Save the date for lecture on Christian civility!
Christians are often seen as being at the forefront of contentious debates about issues ranging from politics to family life. St. Andrew's Presbyterian, Houston, invites you to hear Dr. Richard Mouw speak on the need for a renewed focus on Christian civility Wed., Feb. 25, 7:00 p.m. in the Warren Family Center. Dr. Mouw, professor and former president of Fuller Seminary, will speak on how the Christian message might provide a foundation for intelligent and civil dialogue. He advocates for civility in communication and an appreciation of opposing viewpoints.
Douglas Ottati
Plan now to attend Duerr Lecture Series
St. Philip Presbyterian, Houston, welcomes Dr. Douglas F. Ottati as the speaker for the 18th annual Duerr Lecture Series Sunday-Tuesday, February 22-24. Dr. Ottati, professor of Reformed Theology and Justice at Davidson College, will lecture each evening at 7:00 p.m. and preach during Sunday worship services.

Dr. Ottati's lectures, "Exploring the Teaching of Jesus," will reflect on selected features of Jesus' teachings. He will explore ways in which these teachings have been interpreted in the church's theological tradition and how they connect with broad contemporary issues. All lectures are free and open to everyone. Child care is available for each lecture by calling the church office, 713-622-4807.

Come to a workshop at Austin Presbyterian Seminary to uncover the important insights and valuable critiques this growing demographic has to offer the church today. Mike Clawson, adjunct faculty instructor at Austin Seminary and currently finishing his doctoral dissertation at Baylor on the roots of the Emerging Church Movement, will lead the workshop Wed., Feb. 11, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at Austin Seminary.
