Jesus did not command us to "develop" leaders. He commanded us to make "disciples." The world "develops" leaders, the Church "disciples" them. The two are not the same.

Helping hurting people cope with the Holidays

First Presbyterian, Alvininvites all to "Tidings of Comfort and Joy" worship service Sun., Dec. 7, 6:00 p.m. There are years when we hurt at Christmas time and can't get into the festivities like others seem to be able to do. The service will be followed by a time of light refreshments and fellowship. Please accept this invitation to be with us - a time to move from feelings of despair to experiencing the wonder and hope of Christmas. Doors will be open to all who come. Please feel free to invite others to come with you, as your support, or if you know that they, too, are finding that Christmas hurts.

Medical equipment needed for Christmas Cantata

Ilgreia Presbiterianan Brazileira NCD, Houston, is looking for some medical equipment that they could use for their Christmas program on Sun., Dec. 14. They want to create a set for the program that would include:

  • Hospital Bed (or any kind of bed with a hospital-like appearance)
  • Bedside furniture
  • Monitoring station (a simple station used for holding monitors and IV).

The above picture gives an idea of what they would like the set for the program to look like. They will pick up items and return them. If you can help, please contact Daniel Banov (281-933-3248, ext. 1166) or Marcelo Pinheiro (832-557-5927).

The Outreach Committee is hoping to obtain the use of a Galveston condo or house for one weekend in the winter or early spring. Persons who might be able to help are asked to call Patricia Brantley at the Presbytery office (713-526-2585).

Advent Wreath Lighting Litany

The Association of Presbyterian Church Educators (APCE) offers a lovely Advent Wreath Lighting Litany for two voices (teens or children) as they explore the meaning of the Advent candles. Use as is, or adapt as you wish. The growing light of the advent season is a keen reminder that we should Fear Not!, the theme of the APCE 2015 Annual Event which will be held in Baltimore, Feb. 4-7. The conference will feature keynoters Brian Blount and Carol Howard Merritt, dynamic worship, engaging workshops, and a time of inspiration as well as education. Read more about the conference details.
