Discipleship Thoughts
The "show business," which is so incorporated into our view of Christian work today, has caused us to drift far from our Lord's conception of discipleship. It is instilled in us to think that we have to do exceptional things for God; we have not. We have to be exceptional in ordinary things, to be holy in mean streets, among mean people, surrounded by sordid sinners. That is not learned in five minutes.
- Oswald Chambers

Another 'First Reading' for November presbytery meeting

We have received many suggestions for additional revisions to the Gracious Reconciliation and Dismissal Procedure. The General Council would like to incorporate as many of these suggestions as possible. Therefore, there will be a motion at the November presbytery meeting to withdraw the current proposed revisions. Instead, there will be a first reading of the new revisions which we plan to approve at the March 2015 meeting at St. Philip Presbyterian, Houston. Faithwalking for pastors

Pastors work on behalf of their parishioners in the hopes of helping them go deep into their spiritual lives. Sometimes, though, pastors themselves need to take a brief time out to renew and restore their own faith lives. The Professional Life Subcommittee of the Committee on Ministry is pleased to present such an opportunity in an overnight Faithwalking retreat for pastors only.

Faithwalking follows a rhythm of hearing presentations on missional living, spending time in solitude, and sharing experiences in a small group setting. The retreat begins at 2:30 p.m., Tues., Oct. 14, and ends at 12:30 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 16, at The Cenacle Retreat Center, 420 N. Kirkwood Dr., Houston 77079. Cost: $295 per person. To register, contact Patricia Brantley, 713-526-2585, ext. 101.   Schedule

Time together for couples serving in ministry

Couples who both serve as professionals in a ministry setting experience unique personal and professional challenges, rewards, and successes. A conference, to be held Monday-Thursday, Oct. 20-23 at Mo-Ranch, is an opportunity for couples to come together to explore their calls to ministry as individuals and as a couple, and to talk with other couples who share their unique situation. It also provides time to simply reconnect with their spouse.
