August VaPPFHA Show was large and in charge!
If you were not able to come to the August 22-24 show in Lexington, VA at the Virginia Horse Center, you missed out! The Virginia Presidential PFHA had an outstanding weekend with over 130 horses, exhibitors, spectators, vendors, and more! It was a fun-filled weekend with many laughs, cheers, smiles and Paso Fino horses! With the show being held in the Anderson Coliseum, it was almost as if it was a mini-Nationals. Quite a few people mentioned this and even felt it was good practice for the Grand Nationals, as well as the opportunity to get the needed points to qualify.
It was a rare sight to see a class with only 1 or 2 horses in it. The judges had their hands full with the crazy amount of quality that was in the ring. Class after class was filled with the Paso Fino beat. Some classes had as many as 12 horses in the ring at one time. The atmosphere around the show was filled with laughter and camaraderie, though it did have the undertone of competition. As always, the exhibitors, show officials and spectators were laughing and playing around during the breaks and serious during the classes. There were many smiles to be seen.
The vendors, Kuda Saddlery, Angela Dotson, BM Country Flair, Colombiana Designs, Deltera Jewelry, Jonathan Shaw, Total Balance Method, Riverview Farms and Superior Stables & Construction filled the entrance to the arena with their enticing items, a little of something for everyone.
Once again we held a drawing, 50/25/25, with one winner getting 50% of the pot, one winner getting 25% of the pot and the VaPPFHA getting the rest. Congratulations to Gerald Harlow who won $764 and Caron Higashi who won $367, which left VaPPFHA with $337! A total of $1468 was collected!
The US Marine Corp sent their Color Guard to us for our flag ceremony. It was a splendid sight to see. The color guard was from Battery H/ 3rd Battalion/ 14th Marines. The 14th Marines is a Reserve Artillery Regiment with Battery H located in Richmond, Virginia. Elements of the Regiment were deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom and fought in Fallujah.
The color bearers were Sergeant Barkheimer from Mooresville, Indiana. He was deployed to Afghanistan and also deployed for Pirate Operations off Somalia. He was awarded the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Sergeant Snider from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was deployed to Afghanistan. He was awarded the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal. Sergeant Kessel from Portland, Oregon. He was deployed to Iraq and also deployed to the Arabian and Red Sea for Pirate Operations. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, two Awards of the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Corporal Peay from Mechanicsville, Virginia. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
We also had 6 Paso Fino horses and riders. Luis Figueroa on L'Admirante, Gerald Harlow on La Clave deLa Libertad, Virginia Foster on Alondra, Jonathan Shaw on Dreamcatcher's Domino, Lisa Gorsuch on Rascal and Stephaney Dodson on Cass. Thank you very much to all the riders for assisting with this ceremony.

The largo race, as always, was a lot of fun! There were two heats of 4 horses. After the two heats, the top 2 horses from each heat went on to the final race. There was no catching Allison Rose once that race started! Our returning winner, Picaro del Rey ridden by Angel Rosales, broke into a canter right at the beginning and had to be held back. That's all it took for Allison and she was gone! After she won, Angel assumed the race was over and was overtaken by Virginia Foster! The crowd was yelling at Angel to keep going and try as he might, there was no catching Virginia! Congratulations to our largo queen, Allison Rose, 2nd place to Virginia Foster and 3rd to Angel Rosales! Cash prizes were awarded to the three top winners.
Jonathan Shaw wowed the audience with two falconry exhibits were he explained the history and purpose of falconry. Dawn Cooper put on a clinic about her Total Balance Method therapy and the horse was very appreciative!
This brings an end to our show season with Virginia Presidential PFHA. We could not do this without the continued efforts of the volunteers which are too many to name. We thank them, as well as all the exhibitors that bring their wonderful Paso Fino horses to our shows, and the vendors and sponsors who help make it what it is. Without all of you, we could not be successful. We look forward to seeing all of you next year!
SAVE THE DATES!
Dates for our shows next year are tentatively scheduled for June 5-7, 2015 and August 21-23, 2015! See you there!
