Health Department Offers Annual Flu Vaccine

hand washing The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is offering flu and pneumonia vaccinations to the general public. The vaccine is available by appointment only at the Health Department's Immunizations Annex at 2303 Dodge Avenue in Waukegan.

The most important step in protecting against the flu is getting an annual flu vaccine. Take everyday preventive steps, such as staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others.

For more information, visit the Lake County Health Department website or call 847.377.8470.

Green Living: Help Conserve Our Groundwater

WaterSense Did you know it can take centuries for rain to replenish a groundwater aquifer? In the past, we've offered tips from the Northwest Water Planning Alliance on saving water by fixing household leaks and irrigating your lawn responsibly. You also can help conserve our groundwater supply by using bathroom fixtures, including shower heads and toilets, with a WaterSense label. For more information, visit the EPA's WaterSense website.

Groundwater is not an endless supply. Help use our resource efficiently. View the NWPA flyer.

For more information about organizations working toward a sustainable water supply for this area that is both economically and environmentally sound, visit the website of the Northwest Water Planning Alliance, of which Lake County is a member, or the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

WHS Instructor Named Finalist for National Award

Waukegan High School history teacher Joshua Bill has been named one of five national finalists for the 2012 National History Teacher of the Year Award.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History annually recognizes outstanding American history teachers from elementary school through high school. This past May, Bill, an instructor in WHS House 7, was notified that he had beaten out 50 history teachers from Illinois to win the Illinois History Teacher of the Year Award from Gilder Lehrman. As a State winner, Bill received a $1,000 prize and an archive of books and historical resources for the WHS library.

The honors didn't stop there, however. Last month, Mr. Bill was notified that he was one of just five finalists from across the country in the running for the National History Teacher of the Year Award. The national honor comes with a $10,000 prize and a trip to the national ceremony.

Cooke Magnet Wins Summer Reading Contest

Cooke Magnet School has been named the winner of the Waukegan Public Library's annual Summer Reading Club competition for the third straight year.

Cooke earned the honor by having the most students participate in the annual competition, which challenges students to sign up at the library to read 1,000 pages during summer break. It is open to all public and private elementary and middle schools in Waukegan. Cooke had 100 students sign up for the contest, and roughly one-third of the students successfully completed the challenge.

As the winning school, Cooke retains possession of a traveling trophy awarded to each year's top school. Kindergarten teacher Ms. Jenni DelVecchio was also awarded a Nook tablet for having the most students sign up for the contest.
