Allegany Insider
August 2016

Since our last newsletter, our board made its final funding decisions for the year, and we're off and running in fiscal year 2017. In this newsletter we share about a long-term colleague's retirement, Common Good Initiative updates, changes to the ACOR grant program, announcement of upcoming grant information sessions, and a list of grants awarded this last quarter.
Miguel's Retirement

Miguel Milanes has made a decision to retire effective November 1, after a career of dedicated service to those who are marginalized, underserved and oppressed. Miguel joined us in June of 2003 as the first Executive Director of the Allegany Franciscan Foundation, Miami-Dade, and continued when the role transitioned to Regional Vice President for the Miami-Dade Region. For more than thirteen years, Miguel has been Allegany's face, spirit, and voice in Miami-Dade County.

Miguel, as anyone who knows him can attest, has embraced and lived Franciscan values, and he has done so with great joy and reverence at all times. Miguel has been a trusted, admired and caring colleague to our staff team, an engaged and open partner in the fight to change systems that impact people's health and lives in Miami-Dade, and a respected mentor to dozens of men and women in the nonprofit sector. Miguel is always fully open and present to others, giving of his time and resources far beyond the typical expectations of a job.

We will miss him tremendously, and we know that these feelings are shared by everyone who has worked with Miguel! His retirement is a great loss to Allegany Franciscan Ministries, and to the community, but a well-deserved respite for him.

Please feel free to call or write our President & CEO Eileen Coogan with any questions (ecoogan@afmfl.org). You may also wish to reach out directly to Miguel (mmilanes@afmfl.org).

Common Good Initiative Updates

Since May, the Councils for the Common Good in Lincoln Park, Overtown and Wimauma have been meeting frequently to research, discuss and develop specific strategies for addressing community priorities. Councils are learning more about priority-related issues and engaged in evaluation planning for strategic impact. Celebration activities are being planned to recognize one year anniversary of Common Good Initiative. Several new investments have been made in each of our three communities this quarter. Click on the links below to learn more about the recent investments and overall updates on our progress.

Changes to ACOR Grant Guidelines

A few changes have recently been made to the ACOR grant program effective with the current cycle (October 3 deadline). The most significant change is an increase grant award from $5,000 to up to $15,000. Please review the grant program overview for more information about the guidelines and limitations for ACOR grants. Note: ACOR grants require an affiliation with the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany or Trinity Health.
