Mayor's Update: #SumTraffic Thanks

Mayor Enslow and Councilmember Kathy Hayden thank Senator Dammeier, Rep. Stokesbary and Rep Stambaugh for help with #SumTraffic funding.
It's really nice to see progress being made on the things that affect so many of us.  There's no question that the Traffic Avenue/E Main/SR 410 interchange is a bottleneck that affects Sumner, Puyallup, commuters, freight mobility and even emergency services response.  The good news about so many people being affected at once is that funding can come from a variety of sources.  In this last State session, our legislators in both the 31st District (Sumner) and 25th District (Puyallup) really worked hard to get $300,000 in funding to help design the overpass and intersection changes that will remove that bottleneck.  The Port of Tacoma and Sound Transit have also joined Sumner in funding this, and Sumner was successful in getting a $2.5 million grant from the Freight Mobility Board for construction.

In this "instant" age, it's sometimes easy to forget that progress isn't just when flaggers are on site and actual work is being done.  I wanted to let you know that fighting for the funding to do that is just as important, and we're making great headway.  In Sumner, we're also working to get funding for the Bridge Street bridge, fix the paving on 142nd Avenue and replace the Stewart Road (8th Street) bridge.  The number of projects and amounts needed may seem daunting, but with the support of friends like our State legislators, who understand its importance, we'll get there!

The Heritage Farm Opens

Mayor Enslow, City staff and local funeral homes gathered to see the new Heritage Farm at Sumner City Cemetery last week.  This new cremation garden offers options to bury cremains as well as honor someone whether alive or deceased.  It follows new trends in memorials rather than traditional plots while at the same time celebrating Sumner's agricultural heritage.  Stop by the Sumner City Cemetery to take a look for yourself.  To find out more about memorial options or to donate old farm equipment for further decoration, contact Scott deCarteret

Congestion on Puyallup Street

The good news is that the City will be overlaying Puyallup Street, making the street much smoother for driving.  The bad news is that construction brings congestion.

Please allow extra time when driving through Puyallup Street and Tacoma Avenue.  We wish there was a way to upgrade roads without having to actually work on the road, but we've yet to find it.
Community Conversation about Heroin & Prescription Opiates

From Police Chief Brad Moericke: "I would like to invite you to attend a community conversation about heroin and opiate abuse on June 29th at 7pm at the Pioneer Park Pavilion in Puyallup (see attached flier). The event is being put on by the Pierce County Police Chief's Association and is graciously being hosted by the City of Puyallup. Heroin and opiate addictions are an epidemic in our communities and this forum is designed to be an informative conversation about the issues and what steps are being taken to address this ever growing problem."
