Mayor's Update: Get Your Pink On!

This Saturday, it's Come Walk with Me in Sumner.  This is a  nice, home-grown event that started with a couple of downtown merchants and has grown over the years.  Now, it features hundreds of walkers, and that's very exciting! For me, it's a great way to support a great cause.  You can probably barely see me waving in the sea of pink in the picture from last year.

The event has grown so much that for the first time, this year will follow a new 5K route through downtown Sumner that will hopefully be safer for walkers and easier on drivers using our busier roads.  There will be a rolling shut-down of the streets along the route as the bulk of walkers go by.  I apologize in advance for any inconvenience and hope that you have some fun with this Sumner tradition.  Decorate with pink and cheer walkers on, or better yet, register to walk yourself.

After all, the event may have grown from a handful of energetic enthusiasts to a regional draw of pink, but it's heart is still the same.  The money raised helps keep resources for breast cancer patients local in
our area.  It's nice to know those resources are accessible, although we hope to reach a time when no one needs them anymore.  Until then, walk on and I'll see you in pink this weekend!

The Call of Doo-ty

Do you sometimes find unwanted "presents" left in your yard by oblivious dog owners?  Pet waste left in yards, planter strips, and even parks poses more than one problem. Not only is it obnoxious to discover (often with your shoe), but it also washes into our rivers, polluting the water system we rely on for drinking, fishing and recreation. The City of Sumner has partnered with Sumner Veterinary Hospital to remind everyone to heed the Call of Dooty and scoop it, bag it, trash it.  Signs in the parks and along the trail will help remind dog walkers.  Residents can also get their own yard sign for free from Sumner Vet.  The sign reminds passers-by that your yard is a Doo-ty Free Zone!

Thank You, Stalkers!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to help cut and put up the cornstalks to make Sumner's downtown festive for fall.  "Stalkers" included Leroy Goff, Ryan Windish & Family, Councilmember Kathy Hayden, former councilmembers Mike Connor, Ed Hannus and Jon Swanson, Pat Carrol, Ron Shoemaker & Family, and Ron and Jackie Haines from Napa Auto Parts.  Thanks also to Kevin Caviezel of Sumner Downtown Association for dropping off vests and twine.  And finally, a big thank you to Spooner Farms for donating the stalks themselves.
What's Happening in Sumner?

Do you have a free weekend?  Did you hear a bunch of people cheer and wonder what's going on? Two websites help keep you up-to-date on what's happening.  The City website, www.ci.sumner.wa.us includes a calendar that lists community events as well as City meetings and holidays.  Another website, www.rhubarbpiecapital.com focuses on large events happening in town, like this weekend's Autumn Evening.  Are you planning a community event that's open to the public?  Let us know, and we can probably include it.  Other places to go with lots of event listings, that simply can't be repeated on the City websites, are the Sumner Pierce County Library, the Gordon Family YMCA, and the Sumner School District.  Check all these out and enjoy the many classes, events and fun that Sumner has to offer!
