Mayor's Update: The Beauty of a Good Party
Your participation in Open in Sumner helps disabled veterans golf at American Lake, one of the greater benefits of  Sumner's events.
I must confess that I was taken by surprise last year when hundreds of you took the survey to help us plan the future of Sumner and overwhelmingly told us that events are one of the key services you value.  Of course, everyone loves a good party, but I didn't realize how key they are to making Sumner the special place it is.

This realization further hit home as we
planned Open in Sumner this weekend.  We really envisioned this as a way to entice people in Tacoma, Seattle maybe even southwest Washington to visit Sumner and discover this charming town so that they'll come back again and again to shop in our stores and eat in our restaurants.

Yet, as this event continued to develop, I started seeing the other benefits. To make this happen, our staff have been working for months with partners like Pierce County, The Old Cannery, Sunset Chevrolet, Amazon's Distribution Center here in Sumner, Keurig Green Mountain, First Tee of South Puget Sound, the Sumner Family Center, Sumner Rotary, the Masons, Visit Rainer, the new YMCA...the list is really long.  The point is that this one event gives us the chance to build strong partnerships with neighboring jurisdictions, with businesses of all sizes here in town, with non-profit organizations, and
most of all, with all of you.  The forecast is looking beautiful, and I don't think there's anywhere else where you can dance to The Shy Boys, enjoy The Greatest Game Ever Played outdoors, enjoy a nine-hole putt-putt designed just for this event, try playing Hole-in-One on Main Street, visit the Washington State Fair Traveling Farm and, of course, enjoy a parade down Main Street.

Please come on in and get in on the fun.  All events are free with no advance registration.  If that sounds too good to be true, please stop by and give a donation to the Friends of American Lake Veterans Golf Course, the recipients of all the proceeds.  After all, it's events like this that really make Sumner the special town it is, as you all noted in your surveys last year!

TWO Chances to Win!

Late-breaking news: thanks to DM Disposal, we now have TWO pairs of tickets to the U.S. Open to give away at Open in Sumner!  One pair is for Sunday's championship and the other pair will be for either Friday or Sunday and include access to DM's hospitality area.  Come down Sunday to putt, enjoy the fun, and try to win tickets!

Recycling Center Changes

Due to construction for the much-needed expansion at the Wastewater Treatment Facility, the recycling center at the end of State Street will need to close temporarily through the summer.  The recycling area will shut down next week and remain closed through at least September.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

In the meantime, recycling options are available at DM Disposal's facility at 70th Ave East off Levy Rd in Fife. This site closes at 3:00 pm Monday thru Friday, and is open on weekends, limited to when staff is present. Another option is the Pierce County Transfer Stations with more information here.

Construction also means that access to the shed for the  Bonney Good Sumner Grow soil amendment will also be temporarily closed.  The City of Sumner will continue to provide truck deliveries.

Happy Trails

Last weekend marked National Trail Day, and the Foothills Trail Coalition celebrated with the Rainier to Ruston Relay.  Although the event geographically sort of skirts Sumner, many Sumner-ites participated, including Councilmember Mike LeMaster.  the event is designed to help us all discover and use the trails throughout our communities.

The Sumner Link Trail is now a great option to enjoy Sumner from a different perspective.  The Trail goes along the White (or Stuck) River, features workout stations, benches, informational kiosks and picnic tables complete with barbecue grills. Don't wait for a relay to get out and explore Sumner's and Pierce County's trails.  (And congratulations to Councilmember LeMaster!)

Side-Note: in a nice bit of scheduling, National Trail Day is the day after National Doughnut Day. For National Doughnut Day, Evening Magazine featured local doughnut shops, including nearby Legendary Doughnuts, and owner Ken Patten, who is also one of Sumner's Police Officers.  Yes, you read that right...police, doughnuts, no joking!

Full Sumner Weekend

In addition to Open in Sumner, this weekend kicks off with quite a few events on Friday night too.  The Sounders U-23 will be playing Kitsap Pumas at Sunset Stadium at 7:30 pm.  And, over at Windmill Gardens, it's Girls Night Out with Sumner Rotary hosting quite a party to raise money for the Gordon Family YMCA.  Tickets are sold out for Girls Night Out meaning 650 women are coming to celebrate. Please drive carefully on Main Street that evening (and every evening)!
