Mayor's Update: Building Windmills

There's a Chinese proverb that says "When the winds of change blow, some people build walls, others build windmills."  And then, there are multiple folk songs that remind us the winds of change are always blowing. In other words, change happens.

Through the past few study sessions, the City Council is getting an extensive briefing on the current process to rewrite our Comprehensive Plan and as part of it, our East Sumner Neighborhood Plan.  Through both, our planners are predicting what change will happen in our region in the next 20 years, and what windmills Sumner needs to build (figuratively speaking) to manage that change and maximize its benefits to Sumner.

When I hear about our students participating in things like the recent Benefit Nights, I'm pretty confident that we have a bright, energetic group of future leaders coming, no matter how much changes around us.

Don't get me wrong, it's sometimes hard to want to build windmills.  I have days when I'd rather just build the wall because we already have it really good here in Sumner.  I sometimes have to remind myself that we only have it good today because our predecessors built some nice windmills before us.  It's our turn to not just cherish our past but to also build a future that the next generations will cherish too.

Calling All Floaters!

Community Float
Planning Session

Wednesday, February 25, 5 pm
(the last email said Thursday in error)
City Hall

Have you ever wanted to help design and build a float?  That's something new to add to your social network timeline!  This year, the City of Sumner is coordinating the Sumner Community Float for the Daffodil Parade.  We've always had great floats in the past that represent our community, and we think this year will be no different, but we need some help.  If you think you're interested in participating, even if just for an hour or so, please stop by City Hall on Wednesday, February 25, to help us plan.  We'll have some coffee available to fuel those creative juices.  Who should come?  Anyone who lives or works in Sumner, or anyone who likes Sumner and has always wanted to work on a float!
East Sumner Neighborhood Workshop

Thursday, February 26, 7-9 pm
Sumner Senior Center

In the first sessions, you helped us decide what we want to do in the East Sumner Neighborhood and how to go about doing it.  Now, you'll see the latest versions of proposed zoning, the economic development plan, and the estimated costs for street improvements and wetland mitigation.  Whether this is your first time coming or you've been coming all year, please join us to shape the East Sumner neighborhood.

Puyallup's Bridge Replacement

Although outside of Sumner, Puyallup's bridge replacement on Highway 167 affects a lot of drivers heading to and from Sumner.  Here's the latest construction information from WSDOT: at 7 pm each weeknight from Tuesday, Feb. 24 through Friday, March 13, crews will close the left lane northbound SR 167 at the Puyallup River Bridge. A half-hour later each night, crews will close the left lane of southbound SR 167 at the Puyallup River Bridge. The northbound lanes will reopen at 5:30 a.m. each following day. The southbound lanes will reopen at 6 am each following day.  During each night, drivers may also encounter rolling slowdowns.

Tea Time in Sumner
Thank you to Sue Kidd of The News Tribune for a great article about tea rooms and tea shops, including Sumner's own Secret Garden Tea Room and the Tea Madame.  Speaking of tea, the Sumner Historical Society will also be hosting the Daffodil Royalty Tea at Sumner's own Ryan House on March 29.  Add in The Old Cannery's double-decker red bus and rhubarb itself, and Sumner is getting downright British!  Let us know if anyone spots the BBC on Main Street.
