Mayor's Update: Thanksgiving, Rhubarb-Style |
Thanksgiving is always a time to count blessings, so here are a few 2014 Sumner points of gratitude:
--Not flooding yesterday!
--Finally defining as a community what "improved station access" means at the Sound Transit Station, including a garage on the site of the existing station and improving the 410 overpass.
--Moving closer on the golf course sale and eliminating an annual $1 million drain on our General Fund, replacing it with a sale that will repay all the outstanding debt.
--Progress on a YMCA that will teach our kids to swim, give our teens healthy activities on the weekend and keep all of us active.
--Designs and plans for replacing the outdated Bridge Street bridge with something that celebrates not only in December, but all year long.
--A busy Senior Center providing services and activities for our senior population.
--Two downtown buildings getting major renovations to prolong their life and welcome new businesses to keep downtown flourishing.
And there are many more including Relay, Come Walk With Me, Music Off Main, downtown decorations for the seasons....I'd bore you if I kept going on. But, I will say, for dessert, don't forget a helping of rhubarb pie. ( We have recipes.)
I don't know if we always express how good we have it here in Sumner but there is so much to be thankful for. I hope that you and your family enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving full of gratitude, food, laughter, and rhubarb pie.

A number of the downtown merchants have special plans to celebrate Small Business Saturday with you this Saturday, November 25. Downtown offers name-brand gifts, unique treasures and a much more relaxed atmosphere than any mall or big box store. (Especially this week.) Give Sumner's small businesses a try on Saturday...or really, any day!

We are making progress! The contractors will be preparing the road for paving before Thanksgiving and (weather permitting), paving the following week. What is this again? Due to the East Sumner Regional Stormwater Facility, 160th Avenue E is closed from 60th Street E to 64th Street E.

Please remember that all City offices, and the Sumner Senior Center, are closed Thursday and Friday, November 27-28. |

Due to current and projected customer energy use in Pierce County, Puget Sound Energy plans to construct approximately eight miles of new 230 kilovolt transmission line from the White River transmission substation, located at 2120 Lakeland Hills Way in Bonney Lake, to the Alderton switching station, located at 14450 Old Military Road in Puyallup. They are holding an open house at the Sumner Pierce County Library on Thursday, December 4 from 5 pm to 7 pm. They also offer a lot of information online and an online open house through December 8. Take a look. |

In August, Sound Transit approved Sumner's recommendations for a parking garage and other station access improvements. Voters already approved funding to improve access to Sounder commuter rail stations in the 2008 Sound Transit 2 ballot measure. So, what's next?
To learn more, there is one more Sound Transit Open House remaining: December 2, 6:30-8:30 am, Midtown Station Cafe
