Mayor's Update: Special Memorial Day

Volunteers of all ages help remember the veterans and others who have gone before us for 150 years at the Sumner City Cemetery.

In 1864, life was very hard for all ages, especially children. E.M. Sherman and George Whitesell both passed away at age three and Alice Woolery at age four. Isaac and Mary Woolery offered two acres of their land for a burial place and began what we now know as the Sumner City Cemetery.
This year marks the cemetery's 150th anniversary, and on Monday, we will remember our military who have died. I hope you'll join the City of Sumner, Sumner's VFW, the Rainbow Girls and the 593rd Sustainment Command in the special ceremony at 10 am. We have the honor of being the resting place for veterans who served all the way back to the Civil War as well as the recent war in Afghanistan and everything in between. Tomorrow afternoon, many volunteers will place flags at the markers of all veterans. It's really special to place some flags and watch young children help older veterans with this solemn and moving tradition.
Many people also take the opportunity on Memorial Day to remember all loved ones, and by Monday, the cemetery is filled with flags and flowers. Even if you can't join us on Monday, please take the time sometime this week to simply walk through the Sumner City Cemetery. It's in full bloom with beautiful memories, and you can help us honor and remember the people who have lived in Sumner before us, all the way to E.M., George and Alice, who passed away too young in 1864.
