Mayor's Update: State of the City

On Friday, the Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce asked us and Puyallup to give their businesses an update on the "State of the Cities".   We do this every year, and it's always a great time to consider our accomplishments and look forward to what we would like to accomplish.  Here are a few of the highlights of things we talked about:

  • The Gordon Family YMCA, will break ground this spring and opens in 2015
  • Finances looking up with the third lowest property tax rate for a city in Washington; also, our recently improved bond rating and a clean audit.
  • Sound Transit is working to improve access and find parking solutions for the Sumner Station.
  • The north end is growing more jobs (over 10,000 jobs now in Sumner!) and many Sumner companies routinely honored as leaders in their fields.
  • Community Development is preparing the current update to the City's Comprehensive Plan, which is an important exercise to set our future.
  • Over $68 million in Public Works projects are underway including expanding the Wastewater Treatment Facility, working on replacement of Bridge Street bridge and 8th Street/Stewart Road bridge, looking to add a bridge at 24th Street, and finishing our trails.
  • Our Police Department achieved accreditation and has ongoing partnerhsips for safety including the Drug-Free Coalition, Citizen's Academy and Metro Animal Services
  • We're working to reduce overhead and improve efficiency through reorganization of staff, reducing three director-level positions into one position.
  • We are upgrading communications including a new website that works better on mobile devices.
  • We formed a partnership with Stafford Suites that has the Senior Center booming with activity.
  • The Sounders U-23 team will arrive in Sumner this year to call Sunset Chev Stadium their home field.

The Chamber asked us to also express our "heartbreak," keeping with the Valentine's theme, and Sumner's only real heartbreak is that there are only so many hours in the day to work on all these great things and get them done for you.

Our vision is to set the standard of excellence for a progressive small city.  With the list above, I believe we're doing that, and I sure hope you agree.

Keeping Ryan House Cozy

Last week, the City of Sumner added insulation to Sumner's historic Ryan House to help the building feel warmer to visitors and to keep the City Finance Department from having heart failure when paying the house's heating bill each month.

By blowing insulation into the walls, the City is able to improve the house's efficiency without harming its historic character.  The City has owned and maintained the house ever since the Ryan Family deeded it over in 1928.  If you want to improve your own home's efficiency, no matter how old, visit Puget Sound Energy for ideas.

Sounders' Future Comes to Sumner

Don't put away your blue and green yet!  The Sounders U-23 team is calling Sumner home in 2014.  This is the up-and-coming soccer players getting their start, and for Sumner, it's exciting to be able to watch games right at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Please join the City in welcoming the Sounders U-23 as our newest home team!  Take a look at more information, including the schedule and ticket sales.

Survey Extended--and in Spanish

Thank you to everyone who has already filled out the Comprehensive Plan Survey.  The deadline has been extended to March 3 in order to capture as many thoughts as possible.

Also, if you know of a group of Sumner residents who primarily speak Spanish, a Spanish translation of the survey is now available online to print and return.

Citizen's Academy -- Last Call!

This is your last chance to sign up for the Sumner Police Citizen's Academy. It's fun, it's free and it gives you an interesting look into the world of police work.  (You even get to drive the car!)
Sign up online, and look forward to an exciting month ahead.
