Mayor's Update: Giving Thanks, Sumner Style

Thanksgiving is upon us, and there's so much to give thanks for in Sumner.  We have low tax rates, a YMCA that is finally underway, a charming Main Street for events and shopping, great schools for our kids and grandkids, quality family-wage jobs here in town, a new trail system to help us all stay fit...the list goes on and on.

One of the top things on my list is all of you.  Sumner is blessed to have a very active, engaged group of citizens.  There was a lot of talk this past week about the legacy of John F. Kennedy.  At Sumner Rotary, individuals shared how he affected them.  Over and over, your own neighbors talked about the impact of his speech that reminded us to "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country."  So many said it had never occurred to them before that they could do something that would make a difference.  I hope we never lose sight of that realization, and I hope we share it with the younger generations.

It's a wonderful sense of empowerment, and it's a great responsibility we each have.  Sumner demonstrates daily the benefits of its citizens constantly asking what they can do for this community.  For all your efforts, thank you.

Mayor Dave Enslow

Bridge Lighting Returns

When the turkey is done, it's time for the holidays to begin.  As in years past, Sumner celebrates with the lighting of the Bridge Street bridge.  Please join The Old Cannery for this festive tradition on Friday, November 29.  The bridge lights up promptly at 5 pm with a fireworks show.  Come to The Old Cannery ahead of time for festivities as you wait for the bridge to light up.

Rhubarb Pie Ideas

Do you need another pie idea to round out pumpkin this Thanksgiving?  If you froze some rhubarb, there are many options for rhubarb pie.

If you need some ideas from Sumner, the Rhubarb Pie Capital of the World, check the website for pie recipes shared by the Washington Rhubarb Growers and other fans of rhubarb pie.

Community Dinner Help

Sumner High School students are preparing to host the 9th Annual Community Dinner on December 14, noon - 4 pm, at the High School.  This is a free dinner that is intended to bring everyone in the community together for a celebration of the spirit of the holiday season.  While there is no fee so that everyone can come enjoy the dinner, the students are looking for donations ahead of time to make this dinner happen.  If you're interested in contributing, contact Kaitlyn Neary or John Norlin.  And, don't forget to mark the dinner on your calendar to come celebrate with the Sumner community.
