Mayor's Update: Made in America
Clockwise from top: Mayor Enslow congratulates Jay Taylor of Torklift International; Governor Inslee declares the road to heaven is paved with 167; John Rader of Green Mt. Coffee accepts his award.

Last week, the World Trade Center in Tacoma honored four Pierce County companies for their work in growing jobs.  The Port of Tacoma asked if I'd like to attend since three out of the four companies are located here in Sumner.  The Sumner winners were Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Torklift International, and Yusen Logistics.

It was a reminder to me about how important jobs and business are to our community, and how important Sumner is in our region.  People at Torklift International are building hitches, camper tiedowns and stabilizers right here in Sumner.  Green Mountain is roasting coffee from beans that they carefully select from farms all over the world.  Yusen Logistics keeps the items that we buy in stores moving through the supply chain.

We often talk about the importance of American manufacturing and American jobs.  I'm proud to say that Sumner has done more than just talk: we have worked to bring jobs - over 9000 of them - that support our community and regional economy.  Although we can't always see American manufacturing at work, it's there, and I'm proud that it is here in Sumner.  According to the awards last week, it's not only happening here, it's thriving here.

In Sumner facilities, people are using their crafts--from welding to roasting--to build a career, to support their families, and to give back to this community.  Thank you to these three companies and the others who are dedicated to excellence in the work they do.

Mayor Dave Enslow

Beyond the Borders Bus Continues
At the Senior Center, individuals show the County how many rely on their program for transportation.

Pierce County announced that as of October 1, the Beyond the Borders bus service for low-income and seniors is continuing in Sumner.

The pilot program was to end September 30, so it's good news tous that now the program will continue, although with limited funding. Sumner's route times are cut back, but service remains. Service will be completely cut in Bonney Lake, Spanaway and Yelm, so Sumner remains a lucky community to keep this service.

If you ride the bus, click here for information about the new schedule. If you have questions, please call service provider TransPro at 1-800-656-7846 Monday through Friday 9 am - 4 pm.
