Public Notices

Sumner's Shred & Clean was an overwhelming success with over 17 tons shredded, over 78 pounds of unused drugs collected for safe disposal as well as recycling of batteries and light bulbs and reuse of cell phones and household items.  The shredding truck actually had to leave an hour early because it was full.  Thank you to co-sponsors Daffodil Valley Kiwanis.
Mayor's Update: Encouraging Future City Leaders
Mayor Enslow met with current legal extern Shannon Rieke, a student at Seattle University School of Law plus Professor John McKay, former U.S.Attorney, and Sumner City Attorney Brett Vinson.

Running a city means looking into the future.  Often, the future is gauged with how long a road will last or what kind of zoning to apply.  These viewpoints also apply to people as we help encourage our future leaders.

We have a number of interns and externs working here at the City.  They give us great help at very reasonable prices.  We, in turn, help them gain experience and better understand the world outside the classroom.  All of us get a young workforce that's ready to lead our cities in the future.

This Monday, there will be a special kind of court going on here in City Hall.  Students from local high school civics classes will hold a mock trial and serve as defense attorneys, prosecutors, witnesses, suspects, jurors and judge.  Our own Judge Tim Jenkins and City Attorney Brett Vinson also serve as judges to provide their insight to the students.  What a wonderful way to help young people better understand our third branch of government, whether they pursue a career in the law or not!

I'm very proud of our employees who take the time to share their knowledge and experience with the next generation.  They know that building a city's future is more than pipes and roads--it's about people.

Safe Rider Citations

What is nice about Sumner is that police officers don't just give tickets for violating our laws, but they get to give citations for good behavior as well! This spring, Officers are carrying Safe Rider Citations that they can use when they see kids wearing their bicycle helmets.  The Citation awards that kid with a Happy Meal® at a participating McDonald's.

Video: Council Honors Marching Band

Those of us who live in Sumner know what a gem we have in our Sumner High School Marching Band.  Take a look at Pierce County News story about the Sumner City Council honoring them and their leader Joe Carl.

More Grants for Sumner?

Roads, bridges and trails are getting built in Sumner thanks to grants.

The Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) is considering awarding more grants to Sumner this year.  This is in addition to all the grants we've received over the last year to build trails, sidewalks, bridges, and roads.

Out of 37 projects considered for Federal funding in Pierce, King and Snohomish counties, 21 projects (57%) got recommended for funding and three of those (14%) are Sumner's.  Recommendations include $1,211,000 to design the Stewart Road Bridge Replacement, $79,147 to design the continued resurfacing of East Valley Highway, and $93,500 to design the last missing link in Sumner's trails at what's call the No. 9 Ditch.  These recommendations now go to PSRC's Transportation Policy Board and Executive Board with final approval expected in mid-June.
