Mayor's Update: Updates from Around Town

There is so much going on in Sumner these days that I worry you won't have time to read it all. I'll try to give a quick update on the highlights from last week:

Highway 167

On April 19, I represented Sumner at the Port of Tacoma, where Governor Inslee was discussing the SR 167/509 Puget Sound Gateway Project. I think we need 167 to finally be completed, but I also worry that if Sumner isn't vocal enough, regional leaders will focus just on the missing link and miss the mess on the existing stretch through Sumner that needs updating. I'm continuing to bring up that concern with State and regional leaders.

Fred Meyer Planting Event

On Saturday, I stopped by the Fred Meyer basket planting. That's quite an event! It was great to talk with gardeners about their plans and projects. Whether you get your flowers there or at McLendons or Windmill Gardens or Woodland Park Nursery, all of you gardeners help make Sumner really shine. Thank you for putting your green thumbs to work for beautiful neighborhoods.

Daffodil Festival

I can't thank you enough for braving the rain to come enjoy the Daffodil Parade in Sumner. It was a great time, and the floats were as beautiful and the bands as magnificent as if it was a perfectly sunny day. A huge congratulations goes to Jackie Bechtold's float group for winning the Grand Sweepstakes prize. Sumner's float had over 17,000 daffodils! Thank you to the 593rd Sustainment Brigade for marching in our parade, and of course to the Sumner Marching Band for truly displaying the magic of music.

Sumner Marching Band

Speaking of which, the City Council and I presented Joe Carl and the Sumner High School Marching Band with a key to the city and proclamation, thanking them for their wonderful contributions to Sumner. You can read the full Proclamation here or click here to watch the presentation at the start of our Council meeting on Monday.

 Hearts for Hygiene

The Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Institute is collecting toiletries for the Sumner Food Bank.  Such basic needs are usually not covered by food stamps.  The Institute's Sumner student, Sgt. Matt Kurle, will put out a collection box in the lobby of City Hall.  Click here for more information about what is needed and the full list of collection sites.

Wondering about peanut butter?  We're continuing to also collect peanut butter and will have the boxes in the City Hall lobby well marked for peanut butter and toiletries.

Assistance with Fertilizer

The Mayor mentioned gardeners, but even the most green of thumbs can always use help with fertilizer.  It gets confusing trying to remember when to feritilize what in the yard.  To help, Sumner has compiled a list of tips on a convenient chart.  Click here for a PDF or pick up a printed copy at City Hall.  Fertilizing at the right time helps you save money and helps keep extra fertilizer out of our rivers and water systems.

Community Garden Sign-ups

And, keeping with the garden theme, there are still spots left in the Community Garden if you'd like a little extra land for growing this year.

Single plots are 6' x 12' and cost only $10 each.

Click here for more information and sign-up forms.

Rhubarb Royalty

The magazine, Saveur, features an article, called "Good Stalk: Rhubarb."  Author Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl writes, "In 17th-century Russia, rhubarb was so valuable that much of the country's treasury was derived from the medicinal sales of the imported rhubarb root. When Chinese emperors and Russian czars had a border dispute, withholding rhubarb was China's biggest weapon."
