Mayor's Update:
Businesses Ignite Positive Change
Mayor Enslow speaks to businesses at the State of the Cities lunch.  (Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce)
Last week at the Community Summit, I had the honor of congratulating our Unsung Heroes: Heather Haugen, Robyn Delorm, Claude Brown, April Young, Mikayla Harmon, Melanie Roach and Dave Radcliffe. You'll notice that many of our heroes local business owners, and Sumner businesses seem to be all the buzz lately. South Sound Magazine featured Magnabilities as "A Sumner Success Story."  This is a jewelry company that Susan Fahsel and Kari and Brent Hoke started. They overcame personal obstacles to work together, and in 2010, their business went national. The same magazine also lists The Old Cannery as Best Furniture Store in the Best of South Sound.

And today, there's an article in The News Tribune about Madyson's Marshmallows, a start-up company here in Sumner.  Madyson is seven years old, and her mom Breeze works at REI.  They used a Kickstarter campaign to finance a $12,000 commercial kitchen here in Sumner, and their marshmallows are getting attention from People magazine and Williams Sonoma.  (I have a horrible sweet tooth, by the way, so don't tell my wife that I plan to try some of these marshmallows in my mayoral capacity.)

This is all fantastic news. All of our businesses bring creativity, vitality and jobs to our community. They keep our downtown charming and vibrant; they donate to our non-profits and service groups; and they provide families with living wage jobs.  Our role as the City is to support business with good infrastructure--roads, water, safety, etc.--while keeping taxes and fees as low as possible. I look forward to continuing to work with Sumner's businesses to find ways where together, we can ignite positive change and continue to bring success to Sumner.

P.S.  Sounds like you can get Madyson's Marshmallows at the Tea Madame at Windmill and Ciarrai Jeanne Confections on Main Street.  Let me know if there are other retailers here in Sumner carrying it and the Magnabilities jewelry.

Sumner is in the running for Best Tiny Town from Evening Magazine.  Usually, we trail La Connor, but as of right now, we're number 2 behind Port Townsend and La Connor is number 4!

Speaking of the Best...

South Sound Magazine came out with their Best of the South Sound issue.  Sumner's own The Old Cannery won best furniture store.

South Sound wrote "Search like Goldilocks for the furniture that fits you just right or take a smart shortcut by turning to the Old Cannery for a variety of styles and functions at your fintertips."  Sounds about right!  Congrats to The Old Cannery.

Did you know...?
On average, every dollar spent to bring in visitors to a community generates $20 of sales within the community.  Visitors stay in hotels, eat food in restaurants, shop, buy gas, etc.  That's why promoting Sumner to visitors is so important to the local economy.  On Friday, Councilmember Cindi Hochstatter (shown left) met with Bennish Brown (right) of the Tacoma Regional Convention & Visitor Bureau and other community leaders to discuss how communities can work together to increase visitor stays-and spending-in the region.  Who knew that saying "welcome" could be so profitable?
