A Bridge (And More!) In Our Stocking

Santa has come early in Sumner, and he's brought a couple of large ticket items for our entire city.  The first is a $9.6 million grant from the Federal Bridge Advisory Replacement Committee to replace the Bridge Street Bridge.  Last year, the City had to put the 85-year-old bridge on a "diet," restricting trucks and buses from crossing it in an effort to preserve its remaining life for passenger vehicles and pedestrians.  This grant has gifted Sumner a long-term solution of a new bridge with expanded capacity and a long life ahead of it.  The City is already soliciting Request for Qualifications for a consultant to provide the City with design and placement ideas.  The goal is to provide something decorative and a way to build the new bridge that minimizes impact to traffic during construction.

And, at nearly the same time, another grant came in from the State level.  The Transportation Improvement Board awared the City of Sumner a grant to continue repaving the East Valley Highway.  This funding will repave from Forest Canyon, where our funding stopped last year, to Clerget's Corner.

On behalf of all the drivers in Sumner, thank you, Santa (and the Federal government and the State of Washington)!

Sumner Among Seattle's Premier Attractions

In the ongoing effort to invite more people to visit (and shop and spend the night in) Sumner, we put a Sumner ad in the 2013 Seattle Premier Attractions brochure.  Listing attractions such as the Space Needle, EMP, Northwest Trek, Crystal Mountain and many more, 500,000 copies of this brochure will get distributed in 2013.  The City paid for this ad with the remaining 2012 lodging tax funding that was allocated to the City.

Meanwhile, planning is already underway for allocating the City's 2013 lodging tax revenue.  This is a tax charged to guests at the hotel and motel in Sumner.  By state law, it must be used only to promote tourism, especially room nights since that replenishes the fund for the next year.

This year, instead of the traditional competitive grant process, Sumner is having everyone develop together a unified tourism plan and then fund the items in that plan.  This change should bring better effectiveness through partnership and collaboration.

The plan will be developed in a meeting at the Sumner Holiday Inn Express & Suites on Friday, December 14 at 1 pm.  If you would like to attend, please respond to Carmen Palmer.  Any fund recipients must be a non-profit or government organization, and funding may only be used to promote tourism and generate more overnight stays in the Sumner hotel and motel.
