Training Tips, advice and more!!
Each week we will bring you tips, advice and ideas on how to train, show or play with your dog in all the major venues! Herding, Agility, Obedience, Rally, Therapy, Tracking, Coursing, Barn Hunt and showing conformation!
Disc Dog Canine Catching "Once your dog is consistently taking the disc out of your hand, kneel down and position your canine in front of you about three feet away. Instead of handing him the disc, say, "catch" and gently toss the disc in the air just in front of your dog. Never throw directly at your canine. Always let the canine move to the disc. If your dog moves toward the disc and attempts to catch it, give him lots of praise. Since you want the catch to be the reward, don't let him pick the disc up off the ground if he doesn't catch it. Repeat this exercise until he catches the disc consistently. Also, make sure that you are releasing the disc at a catchable angle, so the disc's edge is easy for him to grab. Next, position your dog to your left side (if you are right handed) and make a short throw (less than five yards) into the wind. As your dog's catching consistency improves, you can advance to longer throws. It is a good idea to make all your throws into the wind so the disc will fly slowly and float long enough for your dog to make a mid-air catch." more on...... http://www.skyhoundz.com/training.html |
Last weekend Timeless Hot Tamale (Spicee) had a great weekend at an AKC trial, earning 5 Q's out of 6 runs. She earned her Open Standard title. She also earned her CGC title a few weeks ago.....good girl Spicee! Donna Crary Johnson |
Here are photos of my girls in agility. Both have their OA and OAJ. The multi picture with me in it is of: Windance's Simply Irresistible OA, OAJ 'Brooklyn'. She has been the most exuberant and high drive little dog to work with in agility, it's all about speed for her. I just love every moment we have in the ring. She now has one leg in excellent. The single picture is of: Danlyn's Miss Congeniality OA, OAJ 'Gracie Lou'. She's a fun, fast, happy dog that tends to have a mind of her own in the ring sometimes. But does she enjoy it. She is taking time off while I'm getting my little Papillon 'Indi' started. Lori Langton |

Requesting submissions for the Goodwill Ambassador!!!
The award will be presented at Nationals
Dogs are many different things to many different people, but once in a while a very extraordinary dog passes through our lives. He may have been the one dog that made an Alzheimer patient smile for the first time in years or a dog that lay at the feet of several shy preschoolers as one by one they gained the courage to read to the wonderful sweet dog. Maybe he is owned by a family member or a friend but if this special mini has touched the life of one person or a thousand people, we want to hear your story! There is no act of kindness too small to submit, because the lives touched by our precious minis are all worth sharing. We will present every one of the stories at Nationals. The winning dog will be voted on by a team of volunteers, and will be honored during the Nationals events with a very special award. Mid America Miniature American Shepherd Club will be sponsoring this award for 2015. Eligible dogs must be registered as a Miniature American Shepherd.
Send your stories and if possible include a few photos to
