UKMASC recently organised the first ever Herding Instinct Test day for Mini American Shepherds in the UK. We were fortunate to have our dogs tested by of one of the UK's top sheep trialling experts, the well-known Jackie Goulder, at her All-Breeds Herding Centre in Yorkshire. As well as working her own Border Collies, Jackie takes a keen interest in the herding abilities of other Pastoral breeds and regularly runs Herding Instinct days for breeds clubs such as Pyrenean Sheep dogs, German Shepherds, Boxers and Bearded Collies. Having run a number of Herding Instinct days for Australian Shepherds, Jackie was especially keen to meet her first MAS and to see how they worked in comparison to their larger counterparts.

We took 14 MAS along for the day, 11 of which were tested. Upon arrival the dogs had a half-hour off-lead in a fenced paddock to meet and greet each other and unwind from the drive over. It was wonderful to see so many examples of the breed running free, socialising and playing together, although perhaps less wonderful to see some of them take an impromptu bath by leaping into the water-trough ...
We couldn't have asked for better weather, a lovelier venue or a more welcoming host. We had a thoroughly enjoyable, sociable and educational day, topped off with bacon butties and cheese bites for lunch, which we shared with Jackie's very entertaining and talkative Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo, Quincey!

The herding instinct of each dog was tested in three separate sessions on the sheep. The first session required the dog on-lead, to approach a circular pen containing three sheep. Jackie kept notes on the dog's response to their first sight of the sheep and watched what their reaction was to the small flock. Fight or flight?! Some dogs feigned a polite disinterest, some were mesmerised, others horrified, at the sight of the three woolly ladies staring back and stamping their feet.
The second session required the handler, and dog still on-lead, to move around the outside of the sheep pen and finally to enter the pen and skirt the perimeter. Jackie took more notes on each dog, watching for signs that the dogs were alert to the sheep, and naturally circling around them yet still responding to the handler's commands. With the dogs in the pen, Jackie took the precaution of using a flexible, plastic leaf-rake as a barrier between the dog and her sheep, just in case a dog got over-enthusiastic and took it's newly-discovered vocation a bit too seriously.
If all went well with this stage, with the dog showing an interest in the sheep whilst still remaining responsive to the handler, for the third session some of the dogs were let off-lead and allowed to start working and engaging with the sheep, driving them cautiously in circles clockwise and anticlockwise around the pen.

Despite some of the younger dogs being wary of the sheep to start with, they had all settled considerably by the end of the day; any initial barking had stopped and most of the dogs were showing some real potential. As we finished our day there were a lot of delighted, smiling handlers and a lot of very tired dogs!

Such was the success of our first ever UKMASC herding day, that a repeat visit to Jackie is already being planned for next year. There are many more of our MAS that we'd like to have the opportunity to gain their Herding Instinct Certificate, and several of our promising youngsters that we'd like to take back and see if they can take their training even further, with a bit of added maturity.
With regards
Annette Stockton
Secretary UKMASC

We should maybe mention - that in comparison to the Aussies she had trained previously, Jackie was seriously impressed with the herding potential of our MAS! :-D

BARNHUNT BRAG!

Wigglebutt Adonis finished his Barn Hunt Association, LLC Open title today with a High In Trial Open! His ribbon is bigger than him. I can't believe he is 12 years old already, sure doesn't act his age. Wigglebutt Han Solo out did him with TWO High In Trial Seniors, and 1st Place Sunday, finishing his Senior title. Wigglebutt Zenyatta got two Master leg. Too much fun - lovin' barnhunt. Proud of the puppers. Thank you Lisa Bataska for your great training, and Sharon Jonas for opening up her barn to practice! Fun stuff...

Calling all members who would like to see well written articles, brochures, and pamphlets with beautiful pictures for/about our dogs published

.

I need volunteers to assist with the Public Relations Committee. One of the first projects is to put together a feature article for the SHOWSIGHT Magazine. These are exciting times in the history of our club and your help and input is much needed. Please let me know through a private email if you would be willing to help with the all-important advertising for our club moving forward in full recognition in AKC. There are other very important items that need our attention as well. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to participate and help get the job done. Together we can have great information, beautiful pictures about our wonderful breed, information about their personalities and trait, along with their accomplishments all published for the public to see. It is my hope that we can form an outstanding PR Committee so we can share with the public how far we have come with our breed. Please consider this committee as your way to help get the information into print for our breed.
