Lori McClelland
How many of you are involved in Therapy dog work, or work in the  R.E.A.D dog program or something similar to all of the above!

Please send me an email about your involvement and a few photos!
THANK YOU!

Hope has 2 national therapy dog certifications. One is through TDInc. The process with them is that you do to their website, find an evaluator in your area, complete the initial paperwork, and schedule an evaluation time. The evaluation is usually done in conjunction with your first visit somewhere, and your dog must be at least 1 year of age. You must do 3 supervised visits and then the paperwork from you and your supervisor (the tester), are submitted to TDInc. The credentials for TDInc are a 'registry', so you are a nationally registered therapy dog team, and can go places independently.

Hope is also certified nationally through LOAL (Love on a Leash). Their process is that you are evaluated with a test much like the CGC. You do not have to use an LOAL evaluator if one is not available in your area (and there isn't one that I know of in Tulsa), you use someone who has knowledge of dogs and dog training, like a CGC evaluator. We used our instructor who is a CGC evaluator.
Then you must have 10 supervised visits. Again with no LOAL supervisor in Tulsa we were able to go with our local group, Pawpals which is through our training club. The team leader of each visit was our supervisor for LOAL. Following the 10th visit, you submit your paperwork. This process also leads to being able to do visits independently.
As I mentioned we are also members of our club's therapy dog group, Pawpals, and this is the group that we visit with now. But we have visited a hospice center, several nursing homes or retirement centers, been reading buddies at two different schools, and most often visit a children's hospital.
Hope has amazed me particularly in her work at the hospice or hospital settings. She is allowed (by her certification and the group rules) to be on the bed, and with the permission of the patient and their parents (if it's a child). She will avoid things like IV lines instinctively. With some kids she snuggles in automatically (and also did so at the hospice setting with a 34 year old woman dying of breast cancer), and with others she looks at them and interacts, and with still others she flops over on her back for tummy rubs. She also loves greeting people in the halls, and probably does more there than even in the patient rooms. She has several things that she does to 'show off'. She will dance on her hind feet, and also has a 'sitting happy dance' that she does. Wherever she goes people smile at her because she is just such a happy dog!
Finally AKC has a therapy dog title, which requires documentation on their forms of 50 therapy dog visits.
The pics are of Hope in her LOAL jacket (she also has a TDInc one), and the other is at Carnegie elementary waiting for a stud.

AKC National Championships

The Miniature American Shepherds did a fabulous job of representing our breed this past weekend. Trudi and Chip even held the top spot for quite some time in agility.

Eleven AKC® National Agility Champions, one National Obedience Champion and the first-ever AKC Rally® National Champion were crowned from a record entry of more than 2,000 purebred and mixed-breed dogs at the American Kennel Club® (AKC®) Companion Events Extravaganza, which took place this weekend in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
