Meet Wully Bully

My "Dance's Wully Bully" has been a member of Love on a Leash for over 10 years and we have been listening to stories read by children for the last 6 years. Wully has always loved to meet and be petted by young kids, so when he retired from agility competition at the age of 8, we joined the local library reading program. Wully gives each reader some wiggles and kisses and then settles down next to them to listen to the story. He may sometimes fall asleep on the job, but hey, isn't that allowed in retirement? After the story, Wully eagerly does a trick or two for a treat and then is ready to greet the next child. Now that he is nearing 14 years and beginning to show signs of old age, we may have to stop going to the library soon but what a long retirement he has had!

yours truly, Bonnie, Gabriella Ravani, (best agility trainer ever!), Lego.

This picture is to celebrate a very successful CPE agility weekend, (most of it in the rain). Lego had a perfect weekend of 10 for 10; (Lego had back to back CPE perfect weekends), and Bonnie had a very respectable 8 for 10!

 Lego's 3rd "perfect weekend" pin.

UPDATED INFO ON MDR1 and heartworm prevention:

The Australian Shepherd Health and Genetics Institute (ASHGI), American Heartworm Society, and Washington State University have all revised their information on the use of heartworm preventives in MDR1 positive dogs.

From the American Heartworm Society Canine Health Guidelines published January 2014:
The heartworm preventives currently marketed (ivermectin, milbemycin oxime, moxidectin, and selamectin) belong to the macrocyclic lactone class of drugs . . . . .The standard chemoprophylactic dosages of all macrocyclic lactones have been shown to be safe in all breeds. http://www.heartwormsociety.org/veterinary-resources/canine-guidelines.html

From Washington State University:
Fortunately, the dose of ivermectin, selamectin, milbemycin and moxidectin in the commercial heartworm preparations are low enough to be used safely even in dogs with the MDR1 mutation. It is only when the drugs are used at high doses, such as those used to treat mange (50 times higher dose than the heartworm prevention dose), that dogs with the mutation will develop neurological toxicity. Attempting to use large animal formulations of these drugs is likely to cause neurological toxicity because it is difficult to accurately measure. http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/drugs.aspx

From ASHGI:
Ivermectin at low dosage, as found in heartworm medications, will not cause a reaction. The larger doses needed for worming will.

WSU has updated the list of drugs to avoid with MDR1 positive dogs. See the link above.
