Registry Changes

Dear Member,

The NAMASCUSA registry is transitioning to the role of vetting dogs for the purpose of registering with AKC. The following changes to registry rules, discussed during the membership meeting of 11/7/13, will be implemented.

Executive Summary:

  • Effective 1/1/14 - Litter Registration is required

  • Effective 1/1/14 - Individual Dog Registration (IDR) is eliminated

  • Effective 1/1/14 - Dual and Hardship Individual Dog Registrations are eliminated

  • Effective 1/1/14 - All dogs from recognized registries may enroll into AKC through NAMASCUSA using the AKC enrollment form

  • Effective 5/9/14 - AKC Australian Shepherds may no longer convert to MAS

  • Effective 1/1/15 - Puppy papers may only be used to enter AKC

  • Effective 1/1/15 - MASCUSA no longer issues NAMASCUSA registration certificates

Effective 1/1/14 - Litter Registrations will be required for the following crosses and the puppies may apply for either AKC or NAMASCUSA registration certificates.

Litter registrations will be required for all litters whelped on or after 1/1/14 that consist of the following crosses:

  • Miniature American Shepherd x AKC Australian Shepherd
  • Miniature American Shepherd x NAMASCUSA Miniature Australian Shepherd
  • NAMASCUSA Miniature Australian Shepherd x AKC Australian Shepherd
    • NAMASCUSA Miniature Australian Shepherd x NAMASCUSA Miniature Australian Shepherd

These crosses involve only AKC registered Miniature American Shepherds or Australian Shepherds and NAMASCUSA registered Miniature Australian Shepherds.

Yellow puppy papers will be issued from these litter registrations and can be used for NAMASCUSA and/or AKC registration through calendar year 2014, however AKC only registration will be encouraged.

This change eliminates the Individual Dog Registration for dogs born on or after 1/1/14. We will continue to accept Individual Dog Registrations for dogs born prior to 1/1/14 that qualify under the rules in effect today.

Effective 1/1/14 - Litter Registrations will be allowed for the following crosses and the puppies may only apply for AKC registration certificates.

Litter registrations will be allowed for litters whelped on or after 1/1/14 that consist of the following crosses:

  • Miniature American Shepherd x Australian Shepherd (other than AKC registered)
  • Miniature American Shepherd x Miniature Australian Shepherd (other than NAMASCUSA registered)
  • NAMASCUSA Miniature Australian Shepherd x Miniature Australian Shepherd (other than NAMASCUSA registered)
  • Australian Shepherd (AKC registered or other registry) x Australian Shepherd (other than AKC registered)
  • Australian Shepherd (AKC registered or other registry) x Miniature Australian Shepherd (other than NAMASCUSA registered)
  • Miniature Australian Shepherd (other than NAMASCUSA registered) x Miniature Australian Shepherd (other than NAMASCUSA registered)

Dogs registered with ASCA, NSDR, the Canadian Kennel Club, MASCA, ASDR, and IMASC, as Australian Shepherds or Miniature Australian Shepherds, are eligible to use this litter registration. The pedigrees of these litters will be vetted and we may require pictures of the parents, to ensure adherence to the phenotype, in addition to other necessary documentation.

Puppy papers will be issued from these litter registrations but can only be used for AKC registration (may be printed on colored paper other than yellow).

Effective 1/1/15 - Puppy papers from ALL litter registrations may only be used to enroll in AKC.

Puppy papers issued as a result of any litter application may only be used for AKC registration. MASCUSA will no longer be issuing NAMASCUSA registration certificates.

Effective 1/1/14 - AKC Applications. All dogs that are currently registered with NAMASCUSA, ASCA, NSDR, the Canadian Kennel Club, MASCA, ASDR and IMASC as Australian Shepherds or Miniature Australian Shepherds, or that have puppy papers issued by NAMASCUSA, may use the AKC application.

NAMASCUSA registration will no longer be issued for dogs coming in from other registries. We will continue to vet the pedigrees of these dogs and pictures will be required to ensure that they meet the phenotype.

This change eliminates the Dual and Hardship Individual Dog Registrations effective 1/1/14.

Effective 5/9/14 - AKC Australian Shepherds may no longer convert to MAS. As of today, our understanding is that any dog registered with MASCUSA (NAMASUCSA Registry) on or before May 9, 2014 will be eligible to be a 3 generation dog even if they have an AKC registered Australian Shepherd within 3 generations and do not register in AKC until after May 9, 2014. (Exception: Any dog that cannot fully verify parentage for a full 3 generations.) We are currently trying to clarify with AKC whether litters registered with NAMASCUSA as of May 9, 2014 will fall under this rule even if the puppy is not yet individually registered.

Other Important Information.

MAS x MAS Litters. The only litters between two Miniature American Shepherd parents that can be registered with NAMASCUSA are those that are bred or born outside the United States. Existing rules requiring AKC only registration of these puppies will remain unchanged. All other Miniature American Shepherd x Miniature American Shepherd litters must be registered through AKC.

AKC Litter Registration Late Fee Waiver. Breeders who want to register litters with AKC that were born prior to the parents being registered in AKC FSS may do so without incurring late fees. They must submit the AKC Litter Application through the NAMASCUSA Registry, with the appropriate payment (made out to AKC) and a note stating what you are doing. We will submit them to AKC per an agreement with them regarding waiver of late fees. If you do not submit these litter registrations through the NAMASCUSA Registry, AKC will charge you late fees.
