Continued prayers for member Lyndsi Guillien!
Lyndsi's husband Nick was in a horrific auto accidient a few days ago and they are in need of many prayers as Nick battles for his life, suffering a traumatic head injury. Nick and Lyndsi have a 4 yr old son and a two month old son. Our club is a great source of support and friendship and during this difficult time I hope each of us can find a way to lift them up and believe in the best outcome for this precious family. Mindy |

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

QUESTION: How do I get started in the tracking events &
what are the AKC titles?
ANSWER: Go to this link to help you get started in the tracking
events.
AKC tracking events are the competition form of canine search
and rescue demonstrating the extremely high level of scent
capability that dogs possess. Unlike Agility and Obedience
events that require a dog to qualify three times, a dog only
needs to complete one track successfully to earn each title.
Tracking Dog (TD) A dog earns a TD by following a track
440 to 500 yards long with three to five changes of direction.
The track is laid by a human tracklayer and is "aged" 30
minutes to two hours before the dog begins scenting. The goal
is to use the scented track to locate an article left at the end of
the trail by the tracklayer. The owner follows the dog on a long
leash and can encourage the dog during the tracking test.
Tracking Dog Excellent (TDX) The TDX is earned by
following an "older" track (three to five hours) that is also longer
(800 to 1,000 yard) and has five to seven directional changes
with the additional challenge of human cross tracks.
Variable Surface Tracking (VST) In the real world, dogs
track through urban settings, as well as through wilderness.
A VST dog has demonstrated this ability by following a
three- to five-hour-old track that may take him down a street,
through a building and other areas devoid of vegetation.
Champion Tracker (CT) A dog that has successfully completed
all three tracking titles (TD, TDX and VST) earns the prestigious
title of Champion Tracker.
Owners who do tracking with their dogs find joy in seeing the dogs
at work using their innate scenting skills.

CENMAS is holding a Specialty in December at Eukanuba!
and SEMASC a new club forming!
We are in the process of organizing an affiliate club for MAS fanciers in the NC, SC, GA & FL area. We chose these states based on population and the possibility of enough working members from this area and trying not to infringe on areas where others may want to form another club. More clubs mean more opportunity for sponsorship of shows and educational programs to benefit all.
According to AKC, we will need to keep a smaller core group but this, in no way, is meant to exclude anyone who would like to be a part of our organization. Our tentative name will be SouthEastern Miniature American Shepherd Club, subject to vote by the charter members. So come, get on board now and be part of the initial organization.
Please let Lisa Grose at semasc@att.net know and she will send you an application for membership. We will then add you to our discussion forum (fancy word for list). No dues are required until we, as a group, vote on our bylaws and what we feel is needed.

**** Across A Threshold ****
Does your dog sometimes "lose it" or shut down? Understanding his "thresholds" will help you teach him to stay calm and happy
Good article from Whole Dog Journal!...."
The term "threshold" is often tossed around by dog behavior experts when they talk about working through a canine behavior issue. When you work with your dog on, for example, reactivity with other dogs or fear of children, the usual recommendation is to work with the dog "under threshold."
The concept is most often used in relationship to canine aggression, fear, and reactivity. But understanding a behavior "threshold" is helpful for everyday training and learning situations, too. It can be a key element when socializing puppies or young dogs, instrumental in teaching excitable dogs to be calm, and essential for insecure dogs to find confidence.
What exactly is a threshold? Consider the threshold of a front door. When you cross a threshold, you move from one space to another. A behavior threshold is a similar concept; it's when your dog crosses from one emotional state to another. If you spend time with a dog who is concerned about other dogs, you have probably witnessed the moment when he or she moves from seemingly okay into out-of-control behavior. That is going over threshold.
Here are five things that everyone can benefit from knowing about thresholds." Click here for the entire article! |

The Miniature American Shepherd has been accepted into CDHPR (UKC!!)
The Miniature American Shepherd has been accepted into the Canine Developmental Health and Performance Registry (CDHPR) with UKC. This is the first step in seeking full recognition with UKC! In order to receive full recognition, our breed will need to show growth and have litters registered with CDHPR. There is not a time frame on when we will receive full recognition, but I am hoping that we can show them what a strong breed we are as we move forward!
At this time, we are to begin registering our dogs with them. I will be submitting the initial electronic database as well as a written one to CDHPR. This is your chance to get your dogs registered at an affordable price!! Cost is $5.00 per dog being registered with the initial database. After that time, you will submit all applications to CDHPR directly and the fee will be $35 per dog.
DEADLINE EXTENDED TILL OCT 15TH
Any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at ukcminis@gmail.com.
Thank you,
