AKC ADDS NEW ADVANCED LEVEL TO CANINE
GOOD CITIZEN PROGRAM
|
As the result of so many evaluators requesting an advanced level of Canine Good Citizen, we are pleased to announce the AKC Community CanineSM title.
We are announcing the program now; testing will begin in October. There will be another announcement as soon as test kits are available.
AKC Community Canine testing will be administered by CGC Evaluators. There will be no additional fees or testing for evaluators who wish to conduct AKC Community Canine tests.
With the introduction of AKC Community Canine, the AKC's CGC program now provides a comprehensive three- level training program for dogs and their owners. Beginning with AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, progressing to Canine Good Citizen and now to AKC Community Canine, the CGC program trains dogs through all stages of life to be well behaved in society.
AKC Community Canine expands on CGC skills and lays the beginning foundation for obedience, rally and therapy dog work.
While Canine Good Citizen tests are simulations of real world skills, the goal of AKC Community Canine is to test the dog's abilities in a natural setting. For example, rather than the test being administered in a ring, certain elements will involve the dog walking through a real crowd, whether at a dog show or on a busy sidewalk in the community.
As with CGC, AKC Community Canine requires a 10-step test that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC Community Canine title: |

Dog sits or lies down and waits under control. | |
2. |
Walks on a loose leash in a natural situation (not in a ring)-does not pull. | |
3. |
Walks on a loose leash through a crowd. | |
4. |
Dog walks past distraction dogs present; does not pull. | |
5. |
Sit-stay in small group (3 other people with dogs). | |
6. |
Dog allows person who is carrying something to approach and pet it. | |
7. |
"Leave it." Dog walks by food and follows owner instructions, "Leave it." | |
8. |
Down or sit stay-distance (owner's choice). | |
9. |
Recall (coming when called) with distractions present. | |
10. |
Dog will enter/exit a doorway or passageway with owner and remain under control. |

For details on test items, see the AKC Community Canine page.To earn the AKC Community Canine title, dogs must have a CGC certificate or CGC title on record at AKC, and they must have an AKC number (AKC registration number, PAL number, or AKC Canine Partners number). All dogs, including mixed breeds, can get an AKC number that is used to attach titles to the dog's record. There will be a title fee of $20.00.
Dogs passing the AKC Community Canine test will earn the "CGCA" (advanced CGC) title and "CGCA" may be listed after the dog's name.

in Orlando, FL in December.
We had a WONDERFUL booth at last years show and we want to outdo ourselves this year. In order to accomplish this we need YOU!! The club is looking for volunteers with creative ideas to make this happen AND volunteers to host the booth, meet the public and tell them how our breed is so SPECIAL.

Please check your AKC and your NAMASCUSA registrations papers when they arrive, if there are any errors contact registrar@mascusa.org ASAP. It is much easier to correct papers now then a year or two down the road, and typos are unavoidable so read your papers carefully.

The 2013 Nationals are behind us now and its time to get going on the 2014 Nationals.
Who, When and Where?
If you have an affiliate or a group of dedicated individuals that would like to submit a proposal, please send it to the MASCUSA Board . The goal would be to have it with an AKC cluster that offers all venues, especially herding!
The board will consider all requests. Proposals need to be to the board no later than October 1st for consideration.

ASHGI News: Podcast on Risk Factors and Clinical Characteristics of
Leptospirosis
Canine Health Foundation HealthE-Barks
In this podcast we bring you a research update with Drs. Janet Foley and
Jane Sykes who were funded by CHF to determine the risk factors for and
clinical characteristics of a disease called leptospirosis. Dr. Foley is a
veterinarian and disease ecologist who studies the ecology and epidemiology
of infectious diseases in animal and human populations. She completed both
her DVM and PhD at UC Davis where she is now a professor of medicine and
epidemiology. Dr. Sykes obtained her veterinary degree and a PhD in
veterinary microbiology at the University of Melbourne in Australia. She is
Board Certified in Small Animal Internal Medicine and is the founder of the
International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases, a group
dedicated to enhancing control of infectious diseases in animals and thus
reducing spread of disease. Drs. Foley and Sykes will be discussing
leptospirosis and their research results that were recently published in the
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Over the next four weeks, CHF will be highlighting health concerns that are
of particular interest to field and hunting dog owners. Be sure to follow
CHF on Facebook and Twitter to receive information on new podcasts and other
posts related to the Field and Hunting Dog Health Awareness campaign.

Conditional Registration with the AKC
QUESTION: What is the Conditional Registration with the AKC?
ANSWER: Conditional Registration happens when a dog's DNA profile does not match up
with a descendant or one of its ancestor dog's DNA profile.
AKC's DNA programs have resulted in accuracy of registry by evaluating the parentage of
many AKC dogs and litters. By the close of 2006, the AKC had more than 425,000 DNA
profiles from 196 AKC and FSS breeds in its database. A very small percentage of dogs
are found, often years after birth, to have an unknown ancestor.
All AKC registered dogs that are descendants of the unknown ancestor will have their
registration downgraded to "conditional" until a three generation pedigree of DNA profiled
parentage is established. Once a three generation pedigree is established, all future
descendants will be given a standard registration status. "Unknown" will be noted on the
registration or pedigree for the ancestor dog in question. This will only occur in cases
where the dogs are believed to be purebred, but a registered parent is found to be
incorrect.
If the Conditional Registration policy hadn't been started with the AKC, then a single
case of an unknown sire could have resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of AKC
registrations. A negative reaction, especially from owners who registered their dog
with AKC only to later have those canceled, could be very damaging to AKC's image.
The Conditional documents will have a different colored border and will be clearly labeled
as Conditional. A new registration number will be issued so that people familiar with AKC
registration numbers can tell at a glance that the registration is different. For example, a
dog initially registered as TN123456/01 would be registered with Conditional registration
as QT123456/01. The word "Conditional" will be boldly stated on the registration
certificate.
Conditional Registration dogs will be ineligible to compete in conformation classes, but
may participate in the same AKC events in which PAL/ILP dogs may participate.
To register a litter sired or produced by a dog with Conditional Registration, both the
sire and dam must be AKC DNA Profiled.
