MASCUSA will be hosting a Meet The Breed booth at the Eukanuba shows
in Orlando, FL in December.
We had a WONDERFUL booth at last years show and we want to outdo ourselves this year. In order to accomplish this we need YOU!! The club is looking for volunteers with creative ideas to make this happen AND volunteers to host the booth, meet the public and tell them how our breed is so SPECIAL.

INSPECT UPON ARRIVAL
Please check your AKC and your NAMASCUSA registrations papers when they arrive, if there are any errors contact registrar@mascusa.org ASAP. It is much easier to correct papers now then a year or two down the road, and typos are unavoidable so read your papers carefully.
Thank you! |
It is very important to remember to include a copy of your AKC Miniature American Shepherd papers when submitting paperwork to us for processing! |

2014 Nationals Call Attention Members:
The 2013 Nationals are behind us now and its time to get going on the 2014 Nationals. Who, When and Where? If you have an affiliate or a group of dedicated individuals that would like to submit a proposal, please send it to the MASCUSA Board . The goal would be to have it with an AKC cluster that offers all venues, especially herding! The board will consider all requests. Proposals need to be to the board no later than October 1st for consideration.
Thank you!

Miss Brooke has a new title!!!
Jan and Brooke trialed in Bloomington at the CDSP trial this weekend and she earned a 192, 191.5, and a 192.5 to earn her CDX-C Title in CDSP Open Level Obedience
It was just the 2 of them and she was a really good girl all weekend. Such a joy!
Congrats Jan Sears and Brooke, submitted by Connie Orwig |
MASCUSA WILL NOT BE PARTICIPATING IN THE AKC MEET THE BREED IN NEW YORK CITY THIS SEPTEMBER. THE MEET THE BREED AT THE JAVITS CENTER WOULD HAVE BEEN A WONDERFUL SHOWCASE FOR OUR BREED. UNFORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE MEMBERSHIP IN TAKING PART IN THIS EVENT. I DO HOPE THAT WE WILL HAVE PARTICIPATION FOR NEXT YEAR. THIS MEET THE BREED DRAWS OVER 20,000 SPECTATORS EACH YEAR.

BARN HUNT??? RATS!
I was so surprised to get this brag from Jessey, since just the week before a club approached me to host an AKC Barn Hunt at my herding facility. Congrats to Katie and Jessey Horn for actually participating and qualifying in a Barn Hunt!
Brassy Acres Cattle Kate of Dodge City earned her Barn Hunt Instinct title this weekend.
And her 1st leg of her novice title with a 4th place in time
Please note the rats are not harmed in any way

To: All Clubs Licensed to Hold Earthdog Tests
Subject: The New Sport of Barn Hunt
The Barn Hunt Association and the American Kennel Club are pleased to announce that the AKC will recognize titles earned in the new sport of Barn Hunt.
The sport of Barn Hunt is based on the hunting and teamwork skills historically used by "rat catchers" who traveled the countryside ridding farms of vermin. Dogs and handlers work as a team to locate and mark rats (safe in aerated tubes) hidden in a maze of straw or hay bales.
The event is open to all dogs.
"Barn Hunt tests the nose, speed, agility and surefootedness of dogs that have a history of above-ground vermin hunting," said Robin Nuttall, founder of the Barn Hunt Association. "We quickly found out that many breeds and mixed breeds enjoy the search and can excel at this sport."
Barn Hunt events include a pass/fail Instinct class for owners who want to familiarize their dog with the test. The AKC will recognize titles at four testing levels above Instinct. Courses are made increasingly difficult by adding more obstacles, additional diversions and more rats to find. The BHA has developed the sport to be fun for all participants, plus easy and inexpensive to hold.
Legs, or qualifying scores, toward Barn Hunt titles are earned by the dog and handler team completing the course within maximum course time. Placements based on time are awarded, but Barn Hunt is a non-competitive event and teams do not have to beat other dogs to title.
"We are pleased to work with the Barn Hunt Association to recognize Barn Hunt titles on a dog's AKC record," said Doug Ljungren, VP for Companion and Performance Events. "Barn Hunt is another great way for dogs to test their instincts and for both owners and dogs to enjoy a fun activity together."
If owners choose to apply, Barn Hunt titles will appear on their dog's AKC pedigree. The Barn Hunt title application form and information regarding holding Barn Hunt in conjunction with AKC events can be found on the AKC's Title Recognition Program website.
The BHA has been holding practice events country-wide. The first sanctioned event is scheduled for April 13-14, 2013 in Columbia, MO. For more information, including the official rules and event application process, visit www.barnhunt.com.

DNA Profile Requirements - frequently used sires
Question: Are all of my stud dogs required to have a DNA profile?
Answer: Every sire producing seven or more litters in a lifetime
or producing more than three litters in a calendar year must be 'AKC DNA Profiled.'
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Question: Am I required to DNA profile my female dogs?
Answer: No. The requirements only apply to stud dogs. Breeders
may, voluntarily DNA Profile their breeding females.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Question: How is the DNA sample collected?
Answer: The DNA Profile kit contains a bristle brush. This brush is inserted into the dog's mouth and swirled against the inside of the cheek. It is non-invasive and painless to the dog.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Question: Will the dog's DNA profile number appear on all of the registration materials?
Answer: Yes, if the dog is individually registered at the time the swab is submitted to the AKC. After the DNA Profile has been issued, all subsequent Registration Certificates & Pedigrees will include the DNA Profile Number for that dog.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Question: How long does it take the laboratory to process this test?
Answer: You should receive your dog's AKC DNA Profile in approximately six weeks after the AKC receives the DNA sample. The DNA profile requirement is met once that sample is received by the AKC and logged into the Database.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
To obtain a DNA test kit go to this link: http://classic.akc.org/store/
Then click on the DNA Test Kits link on that page to order the test.
*These DNA profiles will be used for genetic identity and for parentage
verification, and, thus, will be used to advance issues relating to the
integrity of the registry.

Educational Series
A new weekly spot on the Tuesday Talk
This week I want to share a youtube video that a member posted on one of the MAS facebook groups, this is long but well worth the time taken to view the Youtube video!
AKC Video Series - Dog Steps
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlEPmaVxNOc
Published on May 19, 2013
Rachel Page Elliott is one of America's most respected authorities on canine locomotion, and her unique illustrated lectures on the subject have done much to awaken breeders and judges all over the world to the importance of recognizing the rights and wrongs in the way dogs move. Her book. Dog Steps, was selected as "Best Dog Book of the Year" by the Dog Writers Association of America in 1973. The American Kennel Club later created a video based on her book. Dog Steps is still valued as a premier resource on the topic of canine movement........ |

*******New Club Forming Now******
We are in the process of organizing an .affiliate club for MAS fanciers in the NC, SC, GA & FL area. We chose these states based on population and the possibility of enough working members from this area and trying not to infringe on areas where others may want to form another club. More clubs mean more opportunity for sponsorship of shows and educational programs to benefit all.
According to AKC, we will need to keep a smaller core group but this, in no way, is meant to exclude anyone who would like to be a part of our organization. Our tentative name will be SouthEastern Miniature American Shepherd Club, subject to vote by the charter members. So come, get on board now and be part of the initial organization.
Please let Lisa Grose at semasc@att.net know and she will send you an application for membership. We will then add you to our discussion forum (fancy word for list). No dues are required until we, as a group, vote on our bylaws and what we feel is needed.
