Herding Fun in Oklahoma!

AKC Tidbits & News!

Be sure and check your registrations certificates from both AKC and MASCUSA for any errors!

Notify Mindy ASAP if you see an error. We are working hard to make sure pedigrees and names are all correct but mistakes do happen and they are easy to fix if you will check your certificates closely and let us know right away.

Also if a dog is now registered with AKC and has been transfered, we will need a copy of the AKC papers showing the new owner if the new owner is registering a litter with us or and an Individual puppy from that dog.

MASCUSA AKC Herding Test/Trial Overview & Results!

22 Entries for the trial, 5 Pre-Trial , 6 Herding Test  and 11 for Instinct Test

Five Miniature Americans came out to work on those Test Titles and certificates.

Several other breeds participated and were very grateful to MASCUSA and Mid America for hosting the Herding Test/Trial. A informative herding seminar followed the last test .

I would like to congratulate the MAS dogs who earned legs and/or Titled!

Breed counts out for the Oklahoma City shows

held in conjunction with our Nationals!

There is a range from 12 to 28 mini American entries each day for the five day show!

For the three open shows there is a range of 38 to 43 total breed entries per show

For the AKC miscellaneous shows there is a range of 17 to 27 breed entries per show.

There are a considerable more number of mini Americans there than any other breed

Pool Safety

The dog paddle may seem like it comes naturally to dogs - and for some it does - but even the best swimmers need some training. The American Kennel Club (AKC®) helps dog owners teach their four-legged friends how to swim and be safe around the pool so they can beat the summer heat together.

  • First and foremost, never leave your dog unsupervised while in the pool! He may need your help and be unable to bark to grab your attention.
  • Start slowly. It's important to build confidence in your dog around the pool. Even breeds that are natural swimmers tend to be afraid the first time they enter the water, so be sure to take it slowly in shallow water and praise your dog every step of the way.
  • Take it one step at a time. Don't let your dog overdo it when he swims. Swimming is great exercise, but as with any workout it should be increased in small increments. Your dog is using new muscles and may get tired quickly.
  • Learning the dog paddle. If your dog begins to dog-paddle with his front legs only, lift his hind legs to help him float. He should quickly catch on and will then keep his back end up.
  • Using a ladder to exit the pool can cause your dog to panic. Dogs are not used to using the ladder, and will need to be taught how to use them.
  • Spray your dog with the hose after he gets out of the pool to rinse off the chemicals from the pool water.
  • Dab your dog's ears with a dry towel or use a blow dryer on cool to get rid of excess moisture. Most ear infections in dogs with floppy ears are caused by too much water and dampness.

                             OptiGen's Health Registry Reporting Policies

(It would be great if the Miniature Americans could receive this report, thank you Judy N for sending this information!)   Read the entire policy by clicking here

OptiGen makes every effort to work closely with a variety of breed clubs to help foster the breeding of healthy dogs. One of the ways that we do this is by providing data reports, at no fee (except for those registries that require one) as described in the table below. These reports are sent to designated repositories, such as the breed club's health committee, or to a national health registry such as the OFA. We only will institute a reporting scheme after the breed club has taken official action requesting and authorizing us to do so. Reporting schemes for the clubs that have taken this action to date are shown in the table.

Breed clubs that would like to initiate such a reporting scheme must take official action within the club to decide the following:

  • To whom or to what database are the results to be sent? (e.g. Club's Health committee chair, OFA, CERF).

  • What class of results are to be sent? For example, do only Normal results get reported or will this be an "Open" registry where all test results are reported?

  • For those breeds that have multiple tests available at OptiGen, which of these tests are to be reported?
