AKC Tidbits and News

New York, NY - Heroes may not necessarily lend a helping hand - for some heroes, it's a paw! To celebrate the life-changing and important ways that dogs impact our lives, the AKC Humane FundSM is once again seeking nominations for its AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE). ACE nominations are open to all dogs. The submission deadline is June 1, 2013.
Former ACE dogs have been awarded for everything from recovering $70,000,000 in drugs and drug-tainted cash to participating in "read-to-a-dog" programs at local libraries .

We had a nice weekend showing in Bakersfield at the Kern County Kennel Club show with Timeless Jewel CGC, RN ( Jewel - blue merle) & Timeless Laughing Out Loud CGC, RN (Giggles - red merle). Jewel qualified both days in Rally Advanced earning 2 legs in her 2nd show ever. Giggles qualified both days in her Beginning Novice Obedience class earning a 3rd & 4th place. The girls didn't get any tune up before the show as their handler (aka me!) was working long hours & out of town on business. They were such troopers in the 80+ degree heat on Saturday I decided they deserved a present. Here they are admiring the new collars they got for hanging in there.

Carole Hill and her dog GR CH MCStorms Sweet Alyssum (Allie) were featured in an article in the Seattle Kennel Club news about Miscellaneous breeds. She competed at their show last month. Allie is Carole's first Miniature American Shepherd.
They may be Miscellaneous breeds but these five have certainly captured your attention!

HEARTWORMS!
Excellent article from Dr Dodds!
General Recommendations Excerpt...."Foremost, I recommend administering heartworm preventive every 45 days instead of every 30 days, but only if this interval is strictly adhered to. If it's difficult to keep track with a reminder calendar, then your dog may need to stay on the medication every month.
Spinosads are found in Trifexis, a monthly heartworm/flea preventive, as well as Comfortis for flea prevention. While I believe these are effective for flea prevention and killing, spinosads are contraindicated in epileptic or seizure prone dogs and should not be given to these dogs. Unfortunately, this is generally unknown and should be shared with your veterinarian, friends and family."
Thanks to Denise Albright for submitting this to share with you |

We are looking for Breeder/Exhibitor/Fancier Folks that want to make a significant contribution to the future of the Miniature American Shepherd. One of the most important aspects in achieving the results is in Judges Education. The Breed Standard Evaluation and Education committee is looking for Seminar Presenters across the US to work with local AKC clubs when they offer requests for judges' education.
Don't worry... we will not be asking you to come up with a program... just deliver it. There will be a Power Point program which will include the breed standard, educational slides with a semi-scripted outline for you to follow, and other handouts which will be presented to the judges on a flash drive. We're looking for people that are knowledgeable in conformation and able to answer any questions the judges may ask in the Q & A session.
If you are interested much more information is available at www.MASCUSA.org then click The breed, then Education. If this is for you, please read the guidelines and fill out the application. Do not be discouraged if you can't meet every requirement on the application. The committee is considering a training session for prospective (and already approved) "presenters" during the weekend of each year's National Specialty if we have enough interest. We do need you.
The BSEE Committee looks forward to hearing from you.

DISCOUNTS! DISCOUNTS, we all need and appreciate DISCOUNTS!
The Health and Genetics Committee is busy working for Discounts for you! They are targeting the month of May to promote them so please help out by contacting Lyndsi Guillien if you wish to participate. Optigen and WSU, both are willing to give us a discount. With WSU, it would be $60 as long as we had more than 5 dogs submitted, I don't forsee that being an issue!
With Optigen to get the 20% off and the 5% additional off we would have to have 20 samples to submit. Members please notify Lyndsi if you are interested in one or both of these discounts and how many samples you would be submitting. Everyone would complete their own paperwork but all submissions will be mailed to Lyndsi in the days following.

MASCUSA returned check policy approval date 3/13/13.
Guidelines for returned checks or payments:
1. A $25 non-sufficient funds/returned fee is assessed.
2. If MASCUSA receives a returned check from our bank for a payment, the payer will be invoiced for the original amount of the check plus the bank fee. The payment of the invoiced amount will be due within 20 days of invoice date. We will not resubmit the original check, nor will we accept another check for the payment. The payer will need to take care of the amount due with a "cash only/ money order/ cashier's check/ or Pay Pal".
3. No processes will be completed until the amount due is paid in full.
4. If a process is stopped and no payment is made all paperwork, applications, etc., will be returned to the person or persons who submitted them. |

BE SURE AND USE THE NEW MASCUSA ADDRESS
ADDRESS CHANGE
Effective immediately, the club's official business address for all mail (including registration paperwork, memberships, and winsheets) will be:
Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA, Inc.
Attn: Patricia Davis, Secretary
PO Box 967
Shawnee, OK 74802-0967
This change of address has been done in order to provide a better system of checks and balances. Paperwork will be held for a sufficient time to allow checks to clear the bank prior to being forwarded for processing. Payment made by PayPal must be against an invoice generated by MASCUSA for specific processes. Foreign money orders and cashier checks must be drawn on a U.S. bank. All mail that has been sent to PO Box 141097, Broken Arrow, OK and PO Box 65, Shawnee, OK, will be automatically forwarded to the new post office box.
If you have any questions regarding this change, you can email the Board of Directors at
|
Note from the Board: PAYPAL
If you are submitting registration transactions and want to speed the process up, please include a request for a PayPal invoice with your paperwork. Please do not make PayPal payments in advance - payments must be made against an invoice. Once the PayPal invoice is paid, the paperwork is immediately forwarded to the registrar. If making payment by check, the process will be delayed approximately two weeks to ensure the check clears the bank. |
