Dynasty's Instant Replay "Ref" had his first outing in the AKC world just two weeks ago, in the first four shows he has now taken the BIS Misc Class twice, he has also won the breed each time. We are having a great time out there and really enjoy the fan base he is getting at the shows. He is a great ambassador for the breed and he enjoys all the attention he is getting. Can't wait to see everyone at Eukanuba!

POPP's Little Tin Man

POPP's Little Tin Man

My dog's name is POPP's Little Tin Man (Ozzy) from Flagtree. Ozzy received his AKC registration in July and the attached photos are of him competing in his first AKC agility trial and our first results. We've competed in NADAC and ASCA trials before, but this was our first time at an AKC trial. We ended up with a Q-3 in novice regular and a Q-2 in novice JWW. Ozzy's only complaint was why they had to go ruin jumpers by adding weaves!

Ozzy lives in Steilacoom, WA and when he isn't trialing, he likes to hike and swim in the great Pacific Northwest!

Great Explanation of the Open Shows!!

How to Count The CM Points!

The Certificate of Merit (CM) requires 15 points awarded in accordance with the following point structure
(Dogs Competing Points) :
2 dogs = 1 point
4 dogs = 2 pts
8 dogs = 3 pts
12 dogs = 4 pts

16 dogs = 5 pts

Your own dog counts as one dog.... but if you are the only dog in your Breed, you can still go onto the Best In Miscellaneous Class (MISC is NOT considered "Group" at the regular dogs shows, by the way).

Each BOB Misc. dog gets to compete with the other BOB Misc breed winners and can earn more points (total of up to 5 in any show) by counting ALL (not just the BOB winners) of the MISC dogs that were actually shown.

* To be awarded the Best In Misc (BIMISC) ribbon, you don't need to have any other dogs in competition. If you are the only MISC entry and you show in the BIMISC competition ..... you win the BIMISC.

NOTE : You may also earn CM points in Puppy Competition and at "Open" shows. At these competitions the Misc Class winners and the FSS Class winners do go onto compete in their "Groups" (confusing, huh?) But they also get to compete for the Best in Show as well.

Open Shows and Puppy Competition do not allow Breed Standard DQ's in the 4-6 month puppy class .... so a puppy could earn a CM and not actually meet the Breed Standard (oversize, bad bite, pink noses, etc.).

Crosstraining Your Show Puppy: Part III

By Deb Eldredge, D.V.M.

Excerpt from the article....

In addition to obedience and agility, you might also want to consider introducing your show prospect to tracking.

A big problem that many exhibitors fuss over with their dogs is sniffing in the ring. This is generally more of an issue outdoors. Even a mature, experienced show dog may try to sniff out the huge hunk of liver bait dropped in the grass or the chicken located conveniently along the down and back route. So how can anyone expect a young dog or pup to handle all those smells?

Scent Is What the World's About

Realistically, a hunk of liver or a piece of chicken is a bit much for almost any dog to ignore. For those situations, we can only hope judges will reinforce making handlers find and pick up any bait they throw. Some judges don't even allow bait in their rings. Quite frankly, with some of the summer outdoor circuits, the rings are truly foul by the weekend. Bees are attracted to the rotting food, it stinks, and if you get any rain - whew!

But many dogs also sniff "just because." They smell where the other dogs have moved or stood. They smell where the superintendent's crew stood to stake in tents, etc. We have to remember that for dogs, scent is what the world is about. So what can you do to turn that sense off for a short time in the ring?
