AKC Tidbits and News
The 9th Annual AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day (RDO), held at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC, was a great success! The free event welcomed dog lovers for a day of demonstrations, giveaways, games, and much more! Hundreds of dog owners got the chance to try the fun sports of Agility and AKC Rally with their dogs at the AKC's My Dog Can Do That! attraction. Attendees met dozens of different breeds at the Meet the Breeds area and enjoyed learning more about them during the breed parades. Dogs showed off their good manners during the AKC Canine Good Citizen testing and also received lifetime protection at the microchip clinic. In addition, spectators enjoyed shopping at numerous vendors, and children had fun at a special games area just for the younger folks.
A huge thank you to Lisa Grose and her husband for representing us at this event and to Dory& John Erickson and one of Lisa's puppy owners. Click on the link below to see some very fun photos that are on the AKC website! There are several photos of our dogs on there! WAY TO GO!!

Just wanted to share with everyone about the Meet the Breed this weekend. I have never been to one of these events and to my surprise it was a popular event. The building was packed. You could hardly walk anywhere without having to wait and everyone brought their dogs! It was awesome and we had a GREAT turnout at our booth for the Mini Americans!! Handed out alot of info and gave out alot of treats for the dogs and candy for the people. Hummmm...I gave away more candy than I did dog treats!! I very much enjoyed it and meeting new people and also seeing some of my customers there with their dogs! It was GREAT!!! Hope to do it again next year! I will post some pics as soon as I get them downloaded. And also I big THANKS to those that helped me make it a success!!!"
This above is a pic of us being introduced as the Miniature American Shepherds in the Parade of Breeds in North Carolina during the 9th Annual AKC Responsible Dog ownership Days. Lisa Grose is in the middle, one of her puppy owners has the pup and Dory Erickson has the blue merle.....

I, Mindy, sent this story to AKC after the event and they were thrilled to see members take such an active role in educating the public! I would like to thank Susan for being such an active person in the community!
Below is the write up from Susan Gesting
September in the Puget Sound area of Washington State means "THE FAIR".
This year Miniature American Shepherds were introduced for the first time at
The Puyallup, Washington fair which is one of the largest fairs in the world and runs for 17 days in September.
Well over a million people will enter through the gates each season to see the animals, crafts, arts, flowers, concerts, rodeo and carnival.
This is the 4th year of an event at the fair that is called the All Around Dogs and we have over 25 booths in a large barn with representatives from special clubs, all breed clubs, 4-H, Guide dogs, therapy dogs, field dogs, a community college vet tech program and the Prison Pet Partnership Program. Demonstrations were held by Boeing Explosive K-9 unit, US Customs, US Army K-9 unit, Overlake Collies with their trick dogs, Saint Bernard's with their cart pulling, Tuxedo's Kennels with their sporting dogs, and the Irish Settler Club of Puget Sound on obedience.
Mission: All Around Dogs to educate the public about being a responsible pet owner, to answer questions from the public on the breeds. Show how the working dogs are used everyday for the public and how they help the public and to showcase the purebred dogs on how to care for them and to show the public responsible purebred breeders and what sports we participle in.
City Lights Miniature American Shepherds (Carol and Kerry Nelson) were there for all three days and they were busy explaining the breed and brought a couple of them down to be petted all three days. Talk about socializing on a small scale. The public loved them and was greatly impress on their temperament. The following dogs were at the fair were City Lights Legacy (Jake), Valhalla's Never Ending Story (Story), Valhalla's Cinderella Story (Cinder), and Valhalla's Red Mist (Red). City Lights Legacy (Jake) was at the Puyallup Valley Dog Fancier booth as we host the events.
This event does qualify for an education requirement for AKC. We find a lot of clubs joining us to educate the public during September AKC Pet Responsibility Month as a lot of us together can cause a loud message.
This event is about education in regards to what it the perfect pet and what does it take to be a responsible pet owner. To be responsible is for us as Purebred dog owners and a breeder is to educate the public. By bringing different agencies together we are there to show the public that besides being our pet, we train and work our dogs in the private sector or in the public agencies. We are there to answer any questions from the public in regards to taking care of them, educating the public of the demands of each breed.
Thank you,
Susan Gesting

No Limit Kevin
Kevin and I had an awesome experience at our first dog show! Kevin won best in show in the miscellaneous category! We only competed with two other breeds, but Kevin was the only puppy. The show was in Santa Ana and miserably hot so I left without taking a photo with the judge. Mrs. Marilyn O'Neil was our judge. I went alone so I had no one to capture the moments this time. I'm so thrilled though! Our next dog show will be in November. I will send better show pics in the future. Thank you for all your help Mindy. This has been an outstanding experience. Jamie Changala |

PUT THESE FUN SHOWS ON YOUR CALENDAR! |
From Wright County Kennel Club:
Please note that on Friday October 5th the Wright County MN Kennel Club will have an Open Show - all MISC and FSS as well as regular breeds are eligible for CM points in the official AKC event. Information as it is available will be at www.wcmkc.homestead.com
The American Boerboel Club has been approved to hold 2 open shows this Oct 6/7
2012 in Davidsonville MD, all Misc and FSS. Ms Pat Hess will judge 1 show and Mr Jim Owens will judge the other. Right now we are asking that you spread the word to your club members in the Washington DC area.
Also, if any club members that may attend have a Jr handler, have them contact me ASAP, we want to host a "fun match" for the Juniors and want to make sure we have participants and schedule the time for them. Thanks |
Great Explanation of the Open Shows!!

How to Count The CM Points!
The Certificate of Merit (CM) requires 15 points awarded in accordance with the following point structure
(Dogs Competing Points) :
2 dogs = 1 point
4 dogs = 2 pts
8 dogs = 3 pts
12 dogs = 4 pts
16 dogs = 5 pts
Your own dog counts as one dog.... but if you are the only dog in your Breed, you can still go onto the Best In Miscellaneous Class (MISC is NOT considered "Group" at the regular dogs shows, by the way).
Each BOB Misc. dog gets to compete with the other BOB Misc breed winners and can earn more points (total of up to 5 in any show) by counting ALL (not just the BOB winners) of the MISC dogs that were actually shown.
* To be awarded the Best In Misc (BIMISC) ribbon, you don't need to have any other dogs in competition. If you are the only MISC entry and you show in the BIMISC competition ..... you win the BIMISC.
NOTE : You may also earn CM points in Puppy Competition and at "Open" shows. At these competitions the Misc Class winners and the FSS Class winners do go onto compete in their "Groups" (confusing, huh?) But they also get to compete for the Best in Show as well.
Open Shows and Puppy Competition do not allow Breed Standard DQ's in the 4-6 month puppy class .... so a puppy could earn a CM and not actually meet the Breed Standard (oversize, bad bite, pink noses, etc.).

This is such a huge honor that I want to be sure our members see the announce made earlier this week by Torre Waller!
Gr Ch Smokey Valley's Neko (9yrs) and Multi Ch Patchwork's Rock-A-Hula Baby (7yrs) both have now recieved their TDIAOV (TDI Active Outstanding Voulenteer) Title which took years to achieve. This is a nice addition to their titles they have achieved over their lifetime. We are very happy to say that both dogs love doing therapy and working with older people and young children doing Tail Waggin Tutors!
