Miniature American Shepherds competing at the European Open Agility Championships 2012 in Sweden
MASCUSA members Detlef and Ilka Hegeler from Germany competed with their Miniature American Shepherds at the Agility European Open Championships 2012.
The contest was held July 27-29, 2012 in Kristianstad, a lovely city in the south of Sweden. The level of this Open European Championships is equal to the FCI Agility World Championships. More than 700 world class teams competed in three height classes (small, medium, large) for the podium finishes, most of them will run in October 2012 at the FCI Agility World Championships for their countries. Because the EO is an open contest not only starters from Europe but from all over the world (i.e. USA, Brasil, Japan, South Africa, Venezuela and many other countries) travelled to Sweden.
Detlef and Ilka were two of only 3 Miniature American Shepherd handlers there. Ilka and her 7 year old MAS "Chelsea" (Black Mountain Just-A-Mazing) competed in the large class (Chelsea for sure was the smallest dog there with exactly 43 cm height). Ilka had some bad luck with 2 eliminations and 2 runs each with one fault - but at the EO one cannot run without risk....
But where bad luck is there must be some fortune too, right? Detlef started with his 4 year old MAS "Bagheera" (Paws On Heavenīs Keen Bagheera) in the medium class against 190 competitors. Although Bagheera was hurt with a pulled muscle 3 weeks before and a heavy stomach upset just a week before the EO she was fit exactly to the day. With two clean runs (agility and jumping) on Saturday they qualified for the individual medium final. And overwhelming again in the final they had another clean run and placed 27th.
On Sunday the team competition was held. In this contest all small and medium dogs were judged together so all in one 370 teams competed. And again Bagheera and Detlef had two clean runs - in Jumping they placed 18th in the medium dog valuation.
Detlef and Ilka went back home very happy - and very proud of their dogs. Now they hope that someday our Miniature American Shepherds were allowed to compete at the FCI Agility World Championships - for that our breed must be recognized by the FCI.
This is the Youtube link to the run of Detlef and Bagheera in the individual medium final:

Conformation is a big part of a lot of our members lives and the important part about it is the time spent with the dogs. Hours traveling to shows, grooming, training, and usually the travels include a family member or friend, maybe several family members and freinds!. All quality time well spent and thoroughly enjoyed by many people. So today I wanted to post a photo of one of our members who has taken on this journey and enjoying every moment of Sharing their Lives with Sassy!
Sassy, so far has three Best of Breed, and two Best in Show, Miscellaneous, all with competition. Our next shows are in September. Sassy is on he current list for the Eukanuba Honor Roll

Anal Sacs???
by Susan Chaney
Who doesn't remember Tricky Woo doing the "flop bott" in James Herriot's stories about the veterinary surgery in Yorkshire, England? The vet would simply express the anal sacs of the overweight Pekinese, remind Tricky's owner to cut down on the dog's treats, then head off to his next call.
You may have never seen any of your own dogs do the flop bott, but you've likely witnessed other dogs as they drag their rear ends across carpet or grass. The behavior helps alleviate the discomfort that accompanies anal sac impaction.
Fortunately, veterinary medicine has progressed since Herriot practiced, and the possible causes of the condition are well-defined, according to Rebecca Ruch-Gallie, D.V.M., clinical coordinator of community practice at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Fort Collins.

Timeless Zero Gravity |
The Certificate of Merit (CM) requires 15 points awarded in accordance with the following point structure
(Dogs Competing Points) :
2 dogs = 1 point
4 dogs = 2 pts
8 dogs = 3 pts
12 dogs = 4 pts
16 dogs = 5 pts
Your own dog counts as one dog.... but if you are the only dog in your Breed, you can still go onto the Best In Miscellaneous Class (MISC is NOT considered "Group" at the regular dogs shows, by the way). Each BOB Misc. dog gets to compete with the other BOB Misc breed winners and can earn more points (total of up to 5 in any show) by counting ALL (not just the BOB winners) of the MISC dogs that were actually shown. * To be awarded the Best In Misc (BIMISC) ribbon, you don't need to have any other dogs in competition. If you are the only MISC entry and you show in the BIMISC competition ..... you win the BIMISC. NOTE : You may also earn CM points in Puppy Competition and at "Open" shows. At these competitions the Misc Class winners and the FSS Class winners do go onto compete in their "Groups" (confusing, huh?) But they also get to compete for the Best in Show as well. Open Shows and Puppy Competition do not allow Breed Standard DQ's in the 4-6 month puppy class .... so a puppy could earn a CM and not actually meet the Breed Standard (oversize, bad bite, pink noses, etc.). AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Dogs Eligible for the Miscellaneous Competition Honor Roll Miscellaneous breeds who have won a CM (Certificate of Merit title) or at least three (3) Best of Breed WITH COMPETITION or One (1) Best in Misc. class WITH COMPETITION during the current qualifying period will earn a place on the Honor Roll. Those who qualified under the Misc. Requirements, and are now a regular status breed, will compete in the Regular Classes. |
