Join With the AKC to Protect Responsible Small Breeders: Sign Our Petition!
The American Kennel Club has created the Join With the AKC to Protect Responsible Small Breeders petition in response to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) new proposed regulations which would create harsh and unintended consequences for responsible small and hobby breeders in this country. Please join us by signing the petition before July 16 when the public comment period to the Animal Care Division of the USDA's Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service ends. The petition, along with AKC's comments on the proposed rule change, will be sent to the USDA.
Support AKC's comments to the USDA regarding the new proposed rule change (RIN 0579-AD57) to the Animal Welfare Act at www.akc.org/petition

AKC has informed us that folks are trying to register litters that are Miniature American Shepherd and Australian Shepherd. Those litters must be registered with NAMASCUSA. You can only register litters with AKC/FSS where Both Parents are already Miniature American Shepherds.
If both parents are now registered with AKC/FSS you will go directly thru AKC to register your litters.
The AKC/FSS Litter paper is on the AKC website, you can't use the online process for FSS, you must print and mail the forms
If one of the parents is not an Miniature American Shepherd you must register that litter with NAMASCUSA. Forms are on the MASCUSA website www.mascusa.org. We will continue to register litters and Individual dogs until May 2014.
NOTE: All foreign members must register all litters and all dogs with us first regardless of whether or not the parents are AKC Mini Americans. |

Puppies: How to Stop Mouthing/Chewing on Owner
http://caninegoodcitizen.wordpress.com/
When puppies are teething, you don't have a behavior problem on your hands, you've got a developmental issue, just the same as when human babies teeth.
When puppies are 2 to 4 weeks old, their tiny needlelike teeth begin to appear. Then, when they're about three months old, puppies start getting their permanent teeth. This process continues until the puppy is about 8 months old.
To handle a puppy who is chewing and mouthing, make sure that you aren't the only readily available chewable object.
1. Control the environment. Puppy proof your home and provide a rich assortment of acceptable chew toys.
2. Have an acceptable alternative close by. Keep the toys in places where you can easily reach them so you can quickly offer an acceptable alternative when the puppy feels a need to chew.
3. Give the puppy the acceptable chewing alternative (to replace the off-limits item). If the puppy chews/mouths you or an inappropriate object (your shoes), give him one of the acceptable chew toys.
4. Teach your puppy that nipping and biting hard are not okay. If your puppy nips and bites too hard, teach the puppy that this is not okay by ending the interaction. You can pull your hand away, say, "OW!" and leave the puppy for a few minutes. Then try again so that the puppy has a chance to be successful. |

Did you know that PennHip has a facebook Page?
From PennHip...
We will be adding the Miniature American Shepherd to our database as soon as we receive our first PennHIP evaluation from a dog in this new AKC breed. Breed specific laxity profiles and percentiles will not be available until we have 20 Miniature American Shepherds in our database; however, you will receive the official distraction index for the dogs you have PennHIP tested.
For those dogs that have already been PennHIP tested as Miniature Australian Shepherds that will be AKC registered as Miniature American Shepherds, they can have their breed changed in our database and on their official report by emailing us at pennhipinfo@pennhip.org with a copy of the AKC paperwork indicating the new breed. We will then email you a copy of the new report. Please feel free to share this information with any additional Miniature American Shepherd breeders/ owners that you have contact with.
Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or concerns. We look forward to seeing your dog's x-rays soon!
Thanks!

PennHIP is a diagnostic technique for evaluating the integrity of the canine hip. |

New Membership Numbering System
You will notice that our membership numbering system has changed. The change incorporates all family members for voting purposes and also matches the membership system for AKC.
The first three digits are your unique member number - the next two digits are for single of family member - the third set of digits is the year you joined or re-joined the club.
Example Joint memberships:
898-01-12, this person is member number 898 and they are the main member and joined in 2012
898 -02-12 this member is part of the above joint membership and is designated by the 02
Single memberships:
899-01-12 this member will have 01 as the middle number
This system will allow us to easily send voting ballots to all members whether they are single or joint memberships and help us keep better track of our total membership.

National Stock Dog Registry
(NSDR)
NSDR is now accepting dogs with NAMASCUSA registrations, as long as they submit certified pedigrees with their applications. This is something we have worked on to help give our members a place to register their NAMASCUSA dogs who don't want to pursue AKC. However NSDR will not accept any dog with ASDR numbers in the pedigree. NSDR is the first original registry for the Miniature Australian Shepherds. http://www.nationalstockdog.org/forms.html

I think that the Working Aussie Source is one of the best locations on the net to find herding trials and clinics!
The opening page is for ASCA Trials but be sure and click on the Other Calendars and the Regional Calendars and other Events of Interest!
Keep in mind that AHBA does not require a club to put on a trial -- an individual can host a trial. So if you have a facility nearby that puts on AKC trials, there's no reason they can't also host AHBA events at the same location.

AKC HERDING TRIALS!
The Miniature American Shepherd is eligible to compete immediately in AKC Herding Trials! As soon as you receive your AKC/FSS number you can enter an AKC Herding Trial.
Find AKC Herding Trials here!
If you have earned an AKC Herding Title please let me know,
Now that we are eligible to compete in AKC Herding Trials, we want to acknowledge those dogs who are out there earning titles and legs towards titles. |
Let's have some fun and gather several photos and videos of our dogs herding!!
Send to me and I will place them in a future Tuesday Talk and maybe we can start a photo gallery of minis herding!
Let's do it right away!!

ATTENTION PHOTOS NEEDED!

The club needs good quality photographs of dogs in various settings, i.e., herding, agility, obedience, family/companionship, etc. These photographs will be used for a variety of things such as use in brochures, other forms of advertising, on the website, etc. If you have some great photographs, please send them in. You will need to submit a Photograph Release Form for any photographs you submit. This form can be found on our website under MASCUSA Forms. The higher the resolution, the better.
Send the photos to Mindy registrar@mascusa.org
