Hi Everyone!
The fall season is upon us! We have all kinds of good news to share. We had a great summer of business... We tripled our catering sales this year in July compared to 2014! Meanwhile, we've been busy investing in facilities and systems to handle the increase in business as well as marketing to keep spreading the word.
We've taken over another 1500 square feet of kitchen space in our facility... we went from sharing our kitchen space with 2 other companies 12 years ago to having 100% of the facility as of September 1st of this year. David, our Executive Chef, has worked hard with Nancy, Ayla, and Anthony to redesign our space for maximum efficiency. We also added a 5th van to our fleet!
Araceli has joined our team full time assisting me with a multitude of important projects, marketing Phil's Sliders catering, as well as cooking in our prep kitchen and at events. We are working to improve our recruiting and hiring practices, establishing safety procedures and automating pack-out lists. Nicky and Nancy are assisting Bruno the General Manager of Phil's Sliders to improve procedures and systems at the restaurant. Ayla works tirelessly to coordinate deliveries, vans, and event pack outs, while Nina has been doing a great job responding quickly and skillfully to inquiries for new events. Benjamin has been staffing our events with a huge amount of care not only for clients but also for the experience of the staff and Nicky has been taking our floral program to new heights! Not to mention all the wonderful people who cook and serve daily to make it all happen.
I'm just trying to learn to get out of everyone's way and support them constructively. Sometimes I hit the mark and sometimes I fail, but what I value most is the opportunity to learn and grow as our companies grow and evolve. It's constantly humbling, which I welcome. My business role models (many of whom I have the pleasure of lunching with weekly at our BNI meeting) all share a humility that I respect and admire and aim to emulate. It's a daily lesson!

Stephen Smith
|
The team here at Hugh Groman Catering would like to congratulate Stephen Smith on his promotion to Sous Chef!
A Pennsylvania native and Johnson & Wales culinary graduate, Stephen has been cooking professionally since the tender age of 14. Stints in Manhattan, Cape Cod, the Florida Keys, Seattle, Alaska & Santa Barbara has led to the SF Bay.
Some of his interests include cooking, fishing, travel, reading & long walks in the East Bay hills. He currently resides in San Leandro with Colleen, his wife of 18 years & Lola the Labradoodle.
We love having Stephen on the team for many reasons: he's easy going, has a great sense of humor, is an extremely diligent worker, is someone who always has a can-do attitude, and of course his wealth of knowledge and experience is invaluable. Thank you for being apart of the HGC team Stephen, we're happy to have you!

Phil's Sliders is our restaurant located at 2024 Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley. Our simple menu includes yummy sliders made from Sun Fed Farms grass-fed beef, fried chicken sliders, vegetarian sliders, crisp potato tots, sweet potato fries, fresh organic cole slaw, salads, milkshakes made with organic milk, and a variety of unique sodas. We also have beer, wine and Sangria!
