Tom O'Donnell
Accountant

tom

Tom started working with us only a few months ago, but in that short time has already proved that he will be a key player in our company's growth.

Before joining HGC he worked for a high end general contractor doing accounting work.  He has also spent time working in hotels and as a bar/club manager and restaurant manager.

Tom's likes to cook, garden, and spend time with his husband Ryan and their friends.  He is a big fan of Disney World and the TV show "The Big Bang Theory," and is also "a bit of a Trekkie."

Tom said he likes working for HGC/GLP/ Phil's Sliders because of "the great people I work with, the flexible schedule, and the challenge of helping a business get to the next level."

We are so happy to have Tom on our team!

THANK YOU
Thank you so much to those of you who have reviewed Phil's, HGC, and Greenleaf Platters on social networking sites such as YELP, Berkeley Parents Network, and Chowhound, as they are among the most powerful sources of new business for us. THANK YOU!
HELP US AT THE FOOD BANK - Tuesday, Sept. 3rd
We love the Alameda County Community Food Bank and
are proud of our ongoing relationship with this amazing non-profit. One of the things this food bank does particularly well is distribute produce to people that otherwise might not have access to things like fresh broccoli, carrots, and zucchini!  We'd love you to join us as we help ready this produce for delivery starting at 12:15pm. Stay until our shift is over at 3:30pm or leave when you need to. We promise you'll have lots of fun!

If interested, please email Michael Gaffney at  [email protected]. He'll get you on our list and send you all the details. THANK YOU Michael for spearheading this incredibly important activity!

This newsletter is dedicated to my mother, Hadele Groman.  Nina, my sister, who works with us at Hugh Groman Catering, Greenleaf Platters and Phil's Sliders, and who writes these newsletters, suggested that we feature our mother.  Hadele passed away in early May from complications from Parkinson's disease.

Some of the many things I learned from my mother are how to entertain from the heart, how to have fun, how to be shameless (in a good way), and how to let one's light shine.  She was a wonderful mother, very loving and gentle; and she had quite a sweet tooth.  She would definitely enjoy the recipe below for Bavarian Mocha Milkshakes, which I learned while working as a busboy at Kaffe Barbara in Lafayette.  Now we serve them as a dessert at cocktail parties, in 5oz glasses topped with whipped cream (Hadele's favorite food group).

I wish Hadele could be around to celebrate with us as the businesses continue to grow and thrive.  Nancy Marshall, our operations director, has been hard at work implementing new comprehensive catering software to help us track ALL the details.  Tom (featured in our staff spotlight) is taking our bookkeeping and financial tracking to the next level and beyond as we prepare to expand our Greenleaf Platters division.  And Phil, my dad and Hadele's husband of 52 years, has been helping out during busy times at Phil's Sliders, his namesake restaurant.  People regularly ask him, "Are you Phil?!"  His amazing display of honest grief, combined with a refusal to feel sorry for himself, has blown me away.

Thank you to all of you for your support and love during a difficult time.

Many hugs,

Hugh
