Personal Injury, Defiance and Grief
by John Cappello
When we think of grief, we generally think about a loss that involves a death. The death of a loved one, friend, or pet can cause great pain and initiates a grief process with which we are becoming more and more familiar. However, the spectrum of grief is larger than the loss we feel from a death. It can involve other types of losses that we experience in life. Last month, I wrote about the grief caused from the loss of a relationship, and this month, I want to talk about another source of grief. The loss we experience from an injury is often a reason people come to see me in my capacity as a psychic medium.
An injury from an accident, for example, can cause a lifetime of grief, and learning to cope with this grief is just as difficult as a loss from the death of a loved one. An injury can cause a person to lose their mobility, lose their income capacity, incur stresses in their relationships, become depressed, or experience other problems. In addition, when an injury affects our mental faculties, we may find we are at the mercy of others. It is not easy to accept unconditional help from others, especially when we are accustomed to taking care of our own needs.
The emotional distress along with the physical handicaps endured while in recovery can leave a person with limited options, but there are some consistent qualities that I notice from those who are recovering. Psychic abilities can be used to ascertain the resolve of a person when they are faced with a situation which limits them. They exude a sense of defiance, and without this virtue of defiance, becoming whole again is more difficult.
Defiance is defined as, "A daring or bold resistance to authority or any opposing force." In this case, the opposing force is the effect of an injury, and using the positive energy of defiance can be a valuable resource when combating this effect. Refusing to give up and refusing to allow problems to overcome us are examples of a healthy use of this energy. We generally think of defiance as a negative, but in this case, it can be very positive.
Defiance is a virtue that can come in handy when facing a physical problem. It is metaphysical because it represents energy "beyond the physical." When we notice a person is using this virtue in their recovery, we admire and respect them for their efforts. It is very rewarding for me to witness this while I am giving readings and working with clients.
