Campaigns get nasty as establishment fights to survive

Vote for anti-toll Good Guys Tuesday!

Election season isn't quite over with eleven contentious run-off races still in play. All will be decided on Election Day, Tuesday, May 24. There are many local races, too.

In the Hill Country (Texas House District 73), pro-toll incumbent Doug Miller has waged the nastiest campaign in memory accusing his anti-toll opponent of unspeakable acts. But even Miller's hometown newspaper called the attacks '...a repugnant piece of work - one entirely devoid of context.'

We cannot allow a desperate incumbent clinging to power to win re-election with outright LIES and drag the good name of a fine patriot, his opponent Kyle Biedermann, into the gutter. Similar tactics are being employed by incumbents in other races, too.

Do NOT forget to vote on Tuesday, May 24!

Comments on 281 DUE Monday!
Overwhelm TxDOT with opposition to HOV lanes
silver-keyboard2.jpg
Make your voices heard. We need to bury TxDOT with comments opposing the HOV-bus lane on 281 in San Antonio. HOV lanes have proven to cause congestion, not relieve it.

ACTION ITEM
Tell TxDOT 'No' to an HOV-bus lane on 281 and open up the new lane to ALL cars. See our flyer with ideas for further comment here.

Comments due Monday, May 23.

Submit your comments here.

(NOTE: Be sure to include your full name and address, and ask them to verify they received your comments)

Why it's a BAD deal
Remember, currently there is NO bus service north of Loop 1604, yet our elected officials are allowing Via to hijack this corridor for its social experiment to get Stone Oak residents to ride a bus. They want to keep the general purpose lanes congested so the only congestion relief available is if you ditch your car and get on a bus (or carpool), which less than 5% of commuters can do.

Even worse, since the buses will only run from Via's planned Park-N-Ride at the corner of Stone Oak and 281, this bus lane is less than 3 miles long! So who will go to the trouble to get on a bus for a three minute express ride only to have the bus integrate with regular traffic after just 3 miles? The HOV lane will run from approximately Redland Rd. to Borgfeld Rd., but since there's only two places to get on, few will ever use it. It's a colossal waste of $538 million if we expend our hard-earned tax dollars on a non-fix to this highway!

SUCCESS: We got everything!
Anti-toll resolutions get adopted into platform

win_win_checks.jpg
It was like a breath of fresh air. We arrived at the GOP convention Monday, May 9 to start testimony before the platform subcommittee handling transportation and property rights. We weren't sure what to expect, but it became very clear, very early that we had friends on this sub committee (thank you Faith Bussey and Chairman Alan Arvello). Gone are the days of Rick Perry! Texans have had enough of toll roads! Governor Greg Abbott made clear he's still committed to fixing our roads WITHOUT TOLLS in convention speech.

We were able to get key changes made to strengthen the platform against toll roads. In 2014, the provision to oppose converting existing lanes into toll lanes was accidentally dropped when we added new language. So that plank was added back in.

We also added in opposition to any kind of restrictive lanes (HOV, bus, toll, and/or bike only lanes). When some re-wording got made, the plank opposing public private partnerships got deleted, so thanks to some fast work by Mr. Arvello, we got that back in.

A plank opposing special purpose districts and their use of eminent domain for private gain also got added in. So we had total success!

This is the NUMBER ONE mechanism available to the grassroots to hold their elected officials accountable. It communicates what we want and use it to pressure politicians to vote the right way when the chips are down.

Thank you!
Thank you to all of the delegates from the precinct, county, and state levels that passed resolutions to make it all happen! Without the overwhelming deluge of resolutions from the grassroots making it to the state platform committee, this success couldn't have happened. Thank you!

DONATIONS NEEDED & APPRECIATED
Our work in Dallas at the GOP convention took a week of travel expenses, which effectively drained our resources. We need your help to get ready for our work during the next legislative session that begins in January. TxDOT is up for sunset review and hearings are starting NOW. We're also meeting with legislators to work on getting our bills filed.

Please help us continue our work for YOU!

Remember, we're all volunteers advocating for our fellow taxpayers. Won't you help us have the resources we need by making a generous donation today?

A donation today will help keep double tax tolls off your highways!

***********

Here's what it says:
Transportation and Fuel Taxes - We call for all transportation and fuel taxes collected to be used for road construction, improvement, and maintenance only. We resolve that tax revenue derived from gasoline taxes and all  other taxes/fees on our vehicles (including vehicle sales tax) should only be used for highway construction, and not be diverted to any other use, including mass transit, rail, restrictive lanes, and bicycle paths.

Toll Roads - We believe that tolls should come off the road when the debt is retired, and if the debt is ever restructured or refinanced, the pay-off date needs to remain the same or receive voter approval in order to extend the toll tax longer. Maintenance should then revert to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). We oppose public-private partnerships, specifically regarding toll projects. We oppose conversion of existing roads or lanes to toll roads.

Toll Road Funding - We oppose the use of taxpayer money to subsidize, guarantee, prop-up, or bail out any toll projects, whether public or private, and we call upon both state and federal lawmakers to adequately fund our highways without hidden taxes, tolls, or raiding emergency funds.

Diversion of Property Taxes - We oppose the diversion of property taxes to build, subsidize, and/or guarantee the loans of toll projects, which is primarily being done through transportation reinvestment zones. The State needs to properly fund the Texas State highway system to prevent the use of local property taxes being diverted to state roads.

Management Districts - We oppose the creation of management or special purpose districts with the authority to impose taxes and bond debt and oppose the use of eminent domain by these districts
