Grassroots head to Austin
for 'Toll-free Texas' day at the Capitol
Plan to unveil package of transportation reforms
|
(Austin, TX - Monday, March 23) Concerned citizens from across Texas will descend on the state capitol to advocate not only for more highway funding, but for much needed reforms on toll policy, like taking tolls off roads when the debt is retired (SB 485/HB 1734), and restricting the state highway fund to non-toll roads only (SJR 43/SB 1182). Rep. Scott Sanford (R - Collin) initiated the citizens lobby day and is leading the charge along with Texans for Toll-free Highways, Texans Uniting for Reform and Freedom (TURF), Texas Eagle Forum, Grassroots America, and Texas Patriots, PAC, who are official sponsors of the event.
Sanford made national news with help of his colleagues Rep. Matt Shaheen and Rep. Jeff Leach when they filed a dozen bills they dubbed 'Toll-free Texas' that address the highway funding shortfall, as well as reduce and eventually eliminate toll roads. The bills also aim to put elected officials in the driver's seat on toll decisions, and prevent unaccountable taxation and perpetual taxation.
