TxDOT backtracks in San Antonio!

Another chance to snag Prop 1 funds for Hwy 281

AFTER the Alamo Area MPO voted to adopt low-priority projects for the 2015 Prop 1 funds, NOW TxDOT's decided to seek public comment on it BEFORE the Texas Transportation Commission votes on it later this month.

This is our chance to snag the Prop 1 funds to get US 281 done WITHOUT TOLLS as was promised by the RMA, the MPO, and in a letter from County Judge Nelson Wolff and Senator Donna Campbell last year. US 281 has been in the pipeline the longest and had its gas tax funding yanked (and has yet to be restored).

Expect subterfuge
TxDOT is likely to have thousands of comments submitted in FAVOR of their choices for Prop 1 projects with the help of the Chamber of Commerce, special interests, and TxDOT's own employees and their families since one of the Prop 1 projects is to add capacity to part of IH-410 - the highway to get to TxDOT offices! IH -410 is the only major highway that remains toll-free in the MPO's plans. That's no coincidence!

ATTENTION!
URGENT ACTION ITEM
Tell them you want the Prop 1 funds to fix US 281 WITHOUT TOLLS!

SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENTS
To submit written comments here on TxDOT's web site.

DEADLINE: Comments must be received by February 26, 2015.

SPREAD THE WORD ON 281! Then we can start picking off the other major corridors slated for tolling - I-35, I-10, and Loop 1604 & keep SA toll-free.
SAN ANTONIO:
PUBLIC HEARING for I-35 toll project

Plan to attend and submit public comment

podium_man.jpg TxDOT is holding an important public hearing on Thursday, February 26 to solicit public feedback on the proposed elevated toll 'managed lanes' on IH-35 from IH-410 to Schertz.

If you don't want to pay 50 cents a mile to travel on this vital interstate, show-up and BE HEARD! Even if you never take the toll road, your tax money will build it and bail it out and trucks will pass their toll costs onto YOU through a higher cost of goods. The current MPO plan has I-35 marked for a public private partnership. Cintra is already heavily lobbying to snag this vital interstate - the biggest FREE competition near its failing SH 130 tollway  - allowing Cintra to control all routes north-south in Central Texas!

PUBLIC HEARING
I-35 Toll Project
Thurs., February 26
5:00 PM
Morgan's Wonderland
5223 David Edward Drive
San Antonio, TX 78233

CAN YOU VOLUNTEER?
We need folks to help staff our table and pass out educational fliers to attendees. We also take email sign-ups and help direct folks to where they can offer comment (publicly at the microphone or to a court reporter/transcriber privately).

If you would like to help, please contact Sudie Sartor at sudiesartor@yahoo.com or (210) 488-5412.

Toll-free Texas Day at the Capitol

Governor Greg Abbott will be joining us!

Governor Abbott has a plan to keep Texas toll-free. Plan to join us!
Good Guy Rep. Scott Sanford asked for our help to elevate the toll road issue statewide by hosting a Toll-free Texas Day at the Capitol.

We plan to have an exciting line-up of events, including hearing from Good Guy legislators about their bills (and how we can help get them passed), a press conference, and other activities to help us STOP tolls across Texas. We just learned Governor Abbott will be joining us! So you won't want to miss this important event to get us across the finish line.

Plan ahead by setting appointments with your State Rep. and State Senator that day so you can personally tell them the bills you want them to support (by FAR the MOST effective way to get reps on board with our legislation!).

Straus appoints Transportation Committee in the House

Pickett resumes as the Chair, new faces not enough to dilute pro-toll votes

Straus appoints pro-toll Transportation Committee.

Well, we're glad Speaker Joe Straus yanked rabidly pro-toll Rep. Larry Phillips as the Chair of House Transportation, but this committee is pretty pro-toll with one great new anti-toll reformer, Rep. Ron Simmons. Though Yvonne Davis usually votes for toll legislation, she also helps us stop some. She filed a bill to remove eminent domain authority from private toll companies, so we look forward to lots of help from her, too.

Rep. Joe Pickett returns as Chair and there are some new members, but mostly the same ol' committee that votes anti-taxpayer session after session. We'll see if they respond to the overwhelming anti-toll sentiment of Texas voters last election. Both the new Governor and Lt Governor campaigned against toll roads, and Texans are ready to turn the page from Rick Perry's toll nightmare. So we need to be vigilant and take nothing for granted. We need to push this committee toward a Toll-free Texas!

The House Transportation Committee members are Joe Pickett (Chair), Mando Martinez (Vice Chair), Allen Fletcher, Cindy Burkett, Ruth McClendon, Patricia Harless, Jose Menendez, Andrew Murr, Celia Israel, Chris Paddie, Yvonne Davis, Larry Phillips, and Ron Simmons.

More threats from developers in the Hill Country

Now developers want to dump treated sewage into Dry Comal Creek
Landowners in Comal County in the Texas Hill Country are under threat by developers seeking to dump 390,000 gallons of treated sewage into the Dry Comal Creek that feeds into the Edwards Aquifer, San Antonio's sole source of water. This dumping threatens the  property rights of adjacent landowners that have collapsed caves and porous formations less than 1,000 feet from the proposed sewage treatment plant.  There is no requirement for an environmental study to be conducted by an applicant for a Sewage Treatment plant located in Comal County prior to submitting the application.

Happenings around the state...
AUSTIN -

The Capitol Area MPO (CAMPO) will be holding important public meetings on its long-range plan.

The fate of I-35 will be largely determined by what goes in this plan. Cintra wants to sink its teeth into I-35 and control all routes north-south in the central part of our state. I-35 is the life blood of commerce in Texas. We can't let it be tolled, much less fall into the hands of a foreign company!

So stay tuned and give feedback.

CAMPO staff, the Technical Advisory Committee, and the Transportation Policy Board are identifying and refining the mix of transportation projects that will form the backbone of the 2040 Plan. One focus of the 2040 Plan will be improving IH-35.  IH-35 in the CAMPO area consistently ranks in the Top 100 most congested roads in Texas.

Staff is currently drafting the 2040 Plan and looks forward to sharing it with the public in March 2015. Please see their calendar for more details.

Proposition 1 Funding Recommendations
In November 2014, Texas voters approved Proposition 1, a constitutional amendment that provides a new source of state funding for the construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of public roadways in Texas. Toll roads and transit projects are not eligible to receive funds.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is expected to receive about $367.6 million for projects this year, and transportation partners and local officials have worked diligently and with a sense of urgency to develop a list of potential projects to receive Proposition 1 funding. Projects must go to construction in 2015. This is a significant step toward meeting the unmet roadway funding needs in Texas, and input from the public is important. Staff will discuss the impact to the region, potential projects and an expedited schedule for decision-making.

ELLIS, GRIMES, WALLER, MONTGOMERY, LEON COUNTIES -

Say 'NO' to foreign high speed rail in Texas!
This looks an awful lot like the Trans Texas Corridor rail plan. The citizens that live in the path of the proposed Japanese-owned & operated High Speed Rail (HSR) line are joining together and using local government to stop HSR in Texas. Plans would mow down their homes and ranches to make way for a noisy high-speed rail track between Houston and Dallas. Find out more about their efforts at NO TEXAS HSR.com.

Continue to contact your elected officials and tell them to say 'No' to High Speed Rail in Texas. It'll inevitably be an affront to private property rights and a boondoggle leaving taxpayers holding the bag when this foreign corporation fails to make a profit.
