Welcome!

It's my birthday--well, Write from the Inside Out's birthday. We're 8 years old this month--can you believe it? Couldn't have done it without you. THANK YOU!

Throughout the years, my basic offerings haven't changed much: editing, author mentoring and writing workshops. My first workshop in 2006 was a creative nonfiction class at Edible Art next to the Royal Bean Coffee shop on Hillsborough Street. I remember it rained so hard during the second class, the roof leaked and our group had to move a couple of times not to get wet inside! Read more here about my secrets to success these last 8 years!

Tattoos

To celebrate this month, TATTOOS, the collection of short stories I edited for Main Street Rag is only $4.95 (does include $4 shipping and handling). Click here to buy it and get it personally signed to you or anyone one you'd like! More details about this special in the coupon below.

Lots of great stuff going on here! As I'm preparing for an amazing time hosting the SOLD OUT Dream It, Do It Retreat Aug 8-11 at the Bend of Ivy Lodge in Marshall, NC, (photos next month) I'm also prepping for the next series of fall memoir classes. Like I mentioned above, I've been teaching memoir classes for 8 years and am grateful for the many of you reading this newsletter who have taken my classes in that time.

Upcoming Memoir Workshops

My 6-week long memoir class for two hours every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. is similar to the workshop series I taught in January of this year--if you missed out then, you don't want to miss out now. I'm also offering a $250 editing option, which includes critique and line-editing services--a great value since the regular fee is $550. If you're a first time memoir author, this class is for you!

And if you can't make the day class due to time and work schedules, Belea Keeney and I are offering a 3-hour evening memoir class on Tuesday, October 7th from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All details below!

Congrats, Terri!

Fending, Terri Anastasi's new book of poetry is now available through Main Street Rag. I poet mentored Terri and can't wait to see what else she creates. "This is a book filled with images that carry the weight of misunderstandings, yet the strength and compassion of unconditional love. Watch out, world: we have a brave new poet on our hands."

Writing Tips from Alice

Alice Osborn 2013-2
Never make the readers aware that he or she is being told a story.

Create like a child would, without concern for what others may think or whether it's been done before.

To discover your voice, write as if your only reader is an intelligent but uninformed friend, and old friend whom you trust.

Set in 1853, this novel centers around Emma, from a slave-holding family in Georgia and Henry, a former Texas Ranger and now a missionary. Newly married, they leave for West Africa and this is where their faith and trust are tested at every turn. Author Marjorie Hudson says, "This novel turns Emma's life on its head, letting in the light of a different sun, a brighter sun. Beautifully written, compassionate, and accurate, the novel draws on historical research into the life of a missionary woman and the author's heart-home in Africa, where she was raised, a young white American, among Yoruba people.
