June appeared way too fast! Both my husband's parents have birthdays, the kids are starting camps and we've got recitals in dance, singing and guitar. Speaking of which, that's my Irish dance recital pic you're looking at! Plus the season finale of Game of Thrones and the season premiere of the last season of True Blood. Yes, my friends, I live and die by HBO's schedule. How about you?
Not to mention June is the start of the 2014 Hurricane Season, which brings me to my June Random Newsletter Question for a chance at a very sweet prize: What are you doing right now to prepare for Hurricane Season? Email me here
, subject line "Alice's newsletter"!
I'm locating our flashlights which have gone MIA thanks to my son or daughter.
This past month I was on my good friend Rev. Ogun Holder's radio show Rants to Revelations Radio talking about "Do You Have a Book in You?" Rev. Ogun is an amazing host, author and spiritual leader. He's funny too. Please check out the link and the blog.

Poetry and Photography:
You are invited to be an integral part the first annual Art Inspiring Art event, by sharing your energetic spirit via reading poetry. Write a new poem or submit an existing poem This is an existing show of experimental, heterogeneous diptychs in Downtown Durham at the Art Guild. Beyond the immediately accessible visual connections (e.g. composition, form, color), the visual couplets connect with the viewer on visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and energetic levels. Each pair, and the series as a whole, have at least five different levels of connections and contrasts that invite close inspections to explore the relationship of man and his worlds, types of time, elemental changes, and spirituality. You may see them in person over the next week at 120 Morris Street, Durham. Or, here are the images online for inspiration: http://chrisogden.photodeck.com/-/galleries/hand-of-man/ ENTER PASSWORD: poetic

Thank you, Editing Clients!
If you have chosen me to be your editor, I'm so grateful. When you scroll down in the left margin under "Recent Books Alice Has Edited," I have listed Margaret Harrell's and Heather Cobham's new books. Here are a few more:
Support Terri Anastasi's new book of poetry, Fending, soon-to-be published by Main Street Rag. This is the link. $4 on sale! I met Terri through one of my and Belea's free critique sessions this spring and was impressed with her poetry. I introduced her to my publisher, M. Scott Douglass at Main St. Rag and soon we were all cooking on her first poetry chapbook. I say, "This is a book filled with images that carry the weight of misunderstandings, yet the strength and compassion of unconditional love. Watch out, world: we have a brave new poet on our hands."
If your book is ready for an editor, I do have a few openings for clients this summer. Another of my specialties is military history/military fiction.

The best openings cause readers to pose questions to which they simply must find out the answers.
The more opinionated the characters, the more potential for conflict.
Characters are able to say things on the spur of the moment the way we wish we could in life.

Editing Narrative Nonfiction with Alice Osborn
Wednesday, June 11, 2014 from 11:30am-1pm EDT Tuition: $179 Register Online by Clicking Here
What is narrative nonfiction? It is any piece of nonfiction-from a paragraph to a book-that tells a story to make the reader feel like they are in the middle of the action. It includes travel essays, feature articles, artists' profiles, histories, biographies, cookbooks, and case studies. Memoir is the most narrative of all of the narrative nonfiction; the author tells a true story using the fictional elements of setting, character, dialogue and scene. Author and editor Alice Osborn will teach you about finding the personal in the universal, voice, narrative structure, the hero's journey, disclosure to the real people in the story, and most of all, how to make this kind of nonfiction reader-friendly.
* The "I" a composite "I" and a persona/character, and not the "real" author * Tools to discover connections/patterns * Memoir as a unique blend of nonfiction with fictional techniques * Pseudonyms, anonymizing, and composite characters
