Let's shake off those winter blues! It's the True Detective finale (I'm a big fan) on HBO this Sunday as well as the premiere of Resurrection on ABC, which is based on NC author and NCWN Board Member Jason Mott's novel, The Returned. On the heels of the Oscars and Mardi Gras is St. Patrick's Day where it's permissible to drink and be merry even if you're observing Lent. Good stuff. What are you doing this St. Patrick's Day? (email me the answer so you can enter this month's random drawing contest).
I'll be marching and dancing in Raleigh's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade downtown. The fun starts at 10 am on Saturday, March 15th! I don't think I've been in a walking parade since I was in the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech. I've been in a few sailing parades, though.
For more insight into why I took up Irish dance, please read my blog below.
Congrats to Jenny Dickens who won last month's random newsletter contest by telling me that her favorite author is Southern author, Deborah Smith. Thanks to all who submitted.
If you're living in the Triad, come visit me this Saturday night, March 8th at the Tate Street Coffee House from 7-9 pm. I'll be reading my poetry with fellow Raleigh poet Maureen Sherbondy, whose new book Beyond Fairy Tales is now available for you to preorder.
And for the first time in forever I'll be co-hosting an Open Mic in downtown Cary with fellow poet Harry Calhoun on Wed. March 19th starting at 7:30 pm. We have 10 5-minutes spots available for you to read or play your music. Please email me if you're interested!

In early scenes, introduce the settings in which big scenes will occur later.
In real life, most "scenes" don't change much of anything. In fiction, every scene changes something.
Rule of thumb: Your main character should fail at least twice to resolve the story problem, then succeed!
