Is Your Book Ready for an Editor?
What They're Saying About Alice
Insightful, meticulous and engaging are just a few words that come to mind when speaking of my recent collaboration with Alice Osborn. Alice exhibited a keen eye and deft touch editing my latest manuscript. Her recom-mendations were spot-on. When conferencing with her I knew that she was completely immersed in my work and was working diligently to help me bring out the absolute best in my novel. From line-to-line editing to our discussion of characterization, plot development and structure, Alice was a caring and enthusiastic mentor. Like a gifted surgeon she pared away only what was superfluous or unnecessary to the success of the story; she is very adept at working within the confines of the author's wishes. Not only is Alice is a delight to work with, the accompanying editorial services she offers: story synopsis, query letter, and agency listing are invaluable tools in helping market the book. After finishing my next project, Alice will be the first person I call. --Gary Bolick, author of A Snowman in July and Angel's Oracle

Did y'all have a spookylicious Halloween? The weather was perfect here in NC. I was Lady Melisandre from Game of Thrones, my daughter was a zombie and my son a devil. Erin ended up scaring all of the children and in fact her photo is too vile for this family-friendly newsletter.
As many of you know, November is National Novel Writing Month--you have 30 days to write 50,000 words of your novel, so you'll be writing about 1,677 words a day. Email me if you're doing the NaNoWriMo Challenge and if not, I still want to know what you're working on this month. I'll pick a winner from the entries for the drawing. This month's winner is Karissa Sluss who went as Flo from Progressive insurance for Halloween. Congrats, Karissa!
This month also marks the beginning of my new Reiki practice. I have been learning and practicing Reiki for over two years under the guidance of Master Reiki Teacher Dr. Barnsley Brown and now I'm a master practitioner. So what's Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient Japanese natural healing method that promotes balance and wellness. Reiki, applied with the hands by an attuned practitioner (you leave your clothes on, shoes off), addresses all levels of well-being on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. It is highly effective for reducing stress, tension and pain, and for promoting specific healing on the self and others.

I'm now accepting clients for my Reiki practice at Triangle Massage Partners at 8384 Six Forks Rd, Suite 203. I use the powerful energy of Reiki to empower the creativity of writers, musicians, and visual artists. I'm booking now for one-hour Reiki sessions and check out my November special below.
I'm teaching poetry this month through the nuLimina Center and in January back by popular demand, is my Memoir, The Next Level, which will run six Thursdays from Jan. 16 to Feb. 20th from 11:30am-1:30pm at the Center for Excellence in Raleigh. Here's the Live Registration Link so you can book now and save on the Early Bird special and even more by booking today (see coupon offer at the end of this newsletter).
For fun and exercise, I've started taking Irish dance classes with theRince (pronounced Rin-ka) Go Halainn School of Irish Dance in N Raleigh. Our next performance will be Sunday Nov 24 at 6:30pm at Tir Na Nog, downtown Raleigh. Join us for a cup of cheer and dance!
The Fall NC Writers' Conference is Nov 15-17 at the Sunspree Holiday Inn in Wrightsville Beach. Workshops, agents, networking and I'll be helping with the critique service and marketing mart! More info here.

Things don't just happen in fiction. What happens must grow out of the characters' wants and resources.
Characters mention the weather only if it is relevant.
During the writing process, give each main character a temporary name describing that character's primary feature.
