Greetings!
It's July 4th! What are you doing to celebrate? The kids have already decorated their bikes for our neighborhood's annual street parade, which goes right by our house. Last year, the parade included our local station's firetruck and a life-sized homemade R2-D5 unit--this guy was like R2-D2, but he was orange, not blue. (you know I know these things--don't ask!). After the parade, we'll head to the Festival for the Eno in Durham to see bands and dip into the Eno river and then we'll return to our neighborhood for more holiday frolicking! Fun! Check out my pics of the 4th on Facebook!
Last month, I asked what do you need to move you forward? I realized I need more days in the week where I don't leave my office. It's hard to block out time, but necessary to move me and my business and writing forward. Email me how you intend to move forward this month and you'll be entered in the August Random Prize Drawing!
Summer's a great time to schedule in some learning and I have a new class to offer: a 2-session Fiction Boot Camp webinar to boost your confidence with your fictional characters and their Hero's Journey. The first class starts Tuesday, July 23 from 12-1:15 pm. Since it's a webinar, you don't need to be present to participate--all classes are recorded.
Here's what Jennie MacEachern, Wendell, NC said about the class:
"In Alice's fiction webinar workshop I was able to pace myself and break down the assignments into manageable tasks that built upon one another and really caused me to think about the process of writing fiction in its entirety. I did not feel overwhelmed and I greatly appreciated the communication both verbally and electronically during the webinar and throughout the week."
Also, it's getting closer and closer to my Dream It, Do It Women's Writing Retreat from August 23-25 near Asheville. There are only 4 seats left--don't miss my July promotion on this retreat (details below).

Good dialogue is artfully concise. Writing dialogue is great fun! You are allowed to break the rules of grammar, and you get to say anything you want under the guise of character.
Never resolve one conflict before presenting another. |

Fiction Boot Camp
Location: Webinar Series Class meets twice on Tuesdays: July 23 and July 30 Time: 12-1:15 pm EST Tuition: $55 Registration: Click Here
Fiction begins with the main character wanting something so badly it hurts. Your job as the writer is to make life very difficult for your main character so a fresh and inventive plot and story will emerge without clich. Over the course of two webinar sessions, we'll discuss the craft of fiction, which includes point of view, setting, dialogue and figurative language. Alice will give prompts to strengthen and support your work between classes. New and intermediate fiction writers are encouraged to attend and the class will be recorded if you can't make the "live" workshops. Alice is an experienced fiction book editor who has guided scores of novelists on the traditional and independent path to publication.
Wonderland Book Club, meet author Steve Gilbert
Co-sponsored by the NC Writers Network
Location: Center for Excellence, 3803-B Computer Dr. Suite 106, Raleigh, NC 27609 Friday, July 26, 2013 Time: 10:00-noon This month's book is A Lovely, Indecent Departure by Steve Gilbert RSVP: Click Here
This month we're hosting Steve Gilbert of Wake Forest, NC, author of A Lovely, Indecent Departure. Anna Miller wants only one thing, her son, and she will do anything to keep him. When a district court awards custody of Oliver to his father, she abducts the five year old and flees to Italy where with her family's help they disappear into the fabric of her native homeland. Told in prose that is both stripped-down and overpowering, Gilbert shapes the everyday conflict of child custody into a stunning search for sense of worth. A Lovely, Indecent Departure, captures in stark detail a world in which modern archetypes are turned upside down. Find more info about Wonderland at: http://meetup.com/wonderlandbookclub

This workshop is for both published and yet-to-be published writers who wish to craft a marketing and branding strategy for getting the word out about their books via social media networking, websites, blogs, and the good old-fashioned way with press releases and media contacts. If no one knows who you are, how will they buy your book? Alice Osborn will give tips and tricks from her own experience as a successful published writer/editor and will address publicity/marketing tips for both traditionally and self-published authors. Alice uses social media daily to connect, network and grow her business, which she started six years ago. This workshop series will address "new" media such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, as well as "traditional" media such as press releases, query letters and face-to-face networking. |
